You are absolutely right, it ain't no shit. Just great examples of the positive powerful energy that motivates a select few of us to head out and climb daily ... just for the simple joy of doing so.

It is documented accomplishments like the one above and the rest that I posted, that remind me on a regular basis why I love climbing so much. More importantly, why I do it and have done so for most of this life here on earth.

God I love that guy... what a daily inspiration he is to carry on, continue to apply my all, never losing site of the real precious goal and to go forth and do it, daily.

And I´d like to give a plug to the guy who shot the video too- Jonathan Griffith!

What motivates people to spend hours producing elaborate SP trip reports? Well, the REI power points discount is a big push. Some want to pass on information that is best heralded in a personal account, and such people may be altruistic. Some are motivated by "look at me!". After that, we have a lot of engineer/coder-type wonks who get off on making all the details work together to produce a pretty product. That's the positive spin. There is also an element of OCD, which I saw a lot when I was trying to "motivate" people to finish projects.

Why do you need motivation to do something you love? I don't get it. Do you need motivation to have sex?

Great point Kevin. I never understood all the hero worshipping myself. I don't worship porn stars either.

Vitaliy- I see in your original, still unedited post above, you reference training as well. I understand that perfectly well.

My comment, and perhaps Kevin's, was in not following the need for motivation, which I characterized as hero worshipping. Was not- or at least am not now- accusing you of such activities.

A bit of hero worship when one is young is OK, I think, it goes with the "man I´d love to be able to do that". After a while though respect is more meaningful - and sometimes the people one respects were not the ones who were worshipped in younger days.
PS. I would also add that respect is a wide term too - respect for deeds, for beliefs, for what a person is. The latter is, maybe most important, one can respect deeds but think the person is a real schmuck.

All this armchair philosophy is fine and dandy until CIHR or NIH justifies paying a PhD graduate $35,000 because of videos like this.

Yup. That's what a postdoc gets paid: after a 8-10 years of post-secondary education one gets paid 35K because "you get to do what you love," "you need to be motivated by science not money".

Why don't you use that line on the MD making a 6 figure salary? Or the CEO making a 7 figure salary?

I have an idea for the next video: Try studing the effects of cutting their salaries of a CEO or MD to that of a researcher's and see how motivated they remain.

(Have to confess. Couldn't finish watching your video. Not enough motivation.)

that video is right on the mark. if you are really doing something you enjoy, money probably isn't the motivating factor. and if you suddenly increase a postdoc salary to $80k, there's probably other responsibilities / less flexibility that reduces their motivation.

sure, I wouldn't mind doing a post-doc at a higher salary all else staying the same, but why would that happen? post-docs generally produce publications that only have a certain amount of real-world applicability, and get paid accordingly.
