Headlamp with good spot beam

by Steve Larson » Sun Aug 15, 2010 3:06 pm

I'm looking for a headlamp with a really strong spot beam. Being able to light up terrain at least 50-60 meters away is the main desire, with things like price, weight, and ease of use somewhere farther down the priority list. Any suggestions, products to avoid?

The Black Diamond "Icon" is fantastic and has both flood and spot modes. The spot mode is like a damn search light. Oh, and get the rechargeable Li-Ion battery pack. You won't be disappointed.

I have and use a Black Diamond Icon headlamp. It's great if you really need to find your way at night. I use it for backcountry ski patrol. It throws a bright spot but can power down for close up work.

Steve, Miguel Carmona used the BD Icon this winter while we were descending Temple Crag in pitch black night looking for the snow plastered rap anchors above Contact Pass. I would totally recommend the product. This thing floods the terrain in front of you for quite a distance. Awesome headlamp.
