Your favourite weather?

by Lolli » Tue Oct 05, 2010 11:49 pm

I always thought I prefer sunny, warm weather to climb in - which indeed is nice, but I've started to realise that it's not the best weather.
Preferably not rainy - wet makes life so miserable, but foggy, cloudy, snowy is all fine. I enjoy being out in it.

It has a lot to do with how and what you climb, of course.

Any preferences?

When you reach the summit, the clouds are below you.

Modest wind; small bits of snow.

Yes, they are... I remember a sunny and clear but chilly day, how we layed on our stomachs on the edge and watched the eagles soaring below us. It wasn't high, but that gave a feel of great height.

I prefer a clear, cold day with a good hardpack of snow but not much wind. On a good day high on a mountain, the cloud cover below looks just like a giant pillow!

and where you climb too, I suppose. From where I sit, we've learned to like every kind of weather for what it offers in all its uniqueness. Some of our best days out have been pouring rain....but that's life in the PNW and in the coast mountains.

Full blown winter storm. I think nature is at its most beautiful during this time.

I moved to Arizona about twenty years ago, and I just love how the brilliant sunshine beats down
on the white hairs of my face.

My favorite weather?

If you climb, ski, and whitewater kayak, you'll always be happy no matter the weather.

I like 60F and blue skies with a mild wind but I also have a wacko side where my favorite memories include soloing a technical peak in Japan and watching a storm blow up from the valley below (wondering if I was totally screwed) and days like last winter where I was trying to shovel the 6ft of snow that just dumped at my house (yes, its northern arizona) with another storm coming. The blue bird days may be fun but the days that are really nasty make life a bit spicy (and as I say this I'm under a tornado warning which I REALLY hope doesn't happen).

50 degrees F and raining sideways so I don't have to sweat too much… The worse the better is my motto. It's more exciting that way.

Yes, it is more exciting in bad weather - more spicy, yes.

but you're a rock climber, Dingus
(even if you hike a lot)
- I'd love to live in a warm sunny climate. I hate living in November.
But I really like the bad weather hikes too.

Very cold and clear. In the PNW that brings the most stable snow conditions and the most exceptional visibility in the winter (even though it almost never happens). Those kind of days are absolutely beautiful.

I've heard that most women prefer this type of weather. Please correct me if I'm wrong ..
