There's an interesting discussion on a different blog about whether hikers move out of national forests and into national parks this time of year.

I know I certainly change my behavior during hunting season. I don't worry about small game or archery seasons, but deer opening weekend is to be avoided throughout the Midwest. I also stay away from pheasant areas because pheasant hunting rewards quick triggers.

How about the rest of you?

I do keep doing my thing unless I'm bushwhacking. Then I wear bright colors. Hunters should know better, and if they don't, well that’s why we have lawyers.

Americans are money driven people. Anything they can make a buck on they will. With the right lawyer and asshole combined, a large amount of money can be made. There are wild cases out there and if you really wanted to, you could sue for just about anything.

I hunt and I hike, and out here in CA, there doesn't seem to be any problems (that I've ever heard of, in any case) to any significant degree where the two come into conflict.

This time of year in PA there is a lot of hunting going on. I just make sure to stick to the trails and I wear an orange thingy over my chest and back. Plus my day pack is yellow too.

I've never had any issues so far, but during rifle deer season here I stay out of the woods. I personally know a few people that hunt that shouldn't be in the woods and have a gun in thier hands, and I'm sure there are more people just like them. I'm sure 99% of hunters are responsible, but I know with my luck I will run into the 1%.

This is what is wrong with our country. I'm an claims rep for an insurance company. We have attorney's file suite on us for auto accidents our insured did not cause. They know they can get a few thousand out of us to go away. They understand it's cheaper than paying an attorney 22k to fight the case we know we will win. It's fucking bullshit. There is no integrity left in people.

Hotoven I'm not saying your one of those types I understand you just throwing the point out there. Not attacking you at all. But seriously, you could only sue if you live.

Edit: By the way I do hunt and gun season is a little scary, at least in my area. Seriously. You can't walk 50 yards without bouncing off someone.

I would argue that those types of hunters are not qualified. Being safe is part of being qualified.

Funny story... Years ago, before I new better I was hiking in the Boise Natl. Forest near a local ski area. I wasnt more that 5min off the road, hiking a neat looking ridge that went to the top of the ski area. I was happily hiking along, when I hear "bang - bang". Scared the crap out of me! I hit the deck and yell "HHIIIKKERRRR!" I hear Elmer Fudd call "clear", make my way back to the dirt road to find 2 whiskey toting dudes in camo shooting from the back of pick up at 10:00 am. They were drinking crown, cheers to that.... However I walked back to my car, had a mild cardiac event and drove home never to hike in a NF again during hunting season. Its unknown how close I came to getting capped...

My personal experience. Just sayin. I live in Boise, ID and everyone and their dog (seriously) hunts. I do not. I shoot clay pigeons, washing machines etc.

No, everyone, including other hunters, are effectively fair game when it's deer season. You are at your own risk. Clever killers may take full advantage, just the way they are. I'm a target for their death threats, and they have sworn to get me. Quite lethal weapons in their ownership, and they don't need any reason to put you at risk or a knife in your head.

There's people right here, that would probably pull a trigger if they knew there'd be no legal consequences. The way of the Law, sadly.

Hey, 1000Pks, can you tell me the last time someone in CA was killed by a hunter, and the last time someone was killed by a hunter and not convicted on a felony?

I generally hike on Sundays and you can't hunt on Sunday here in VA.
