Orizaba 2010/11 Who's Going?

by Athos791 » Mon Oct 25, 2010 6:03 pm

Hey Everyone,
I'm heading back to Citlaltepetl January 2011 and was curious who else was going? Always nice to meet fellow SPers on the mountain. Im doing a new acclimation program this time around that involves essentially climbing it from Tlachichuca rather than taking a 4-wheel up to the refugio. Anyone on here done it in this method? Let's hear your plans!

Cheers,
Luke

I am going to Mexico from Dec 12-22, with climbs of Iztaccihuatl and Orizaba.

Update: I met a few people who started from the base of the mountain rather than being dropped off at the hut. They seemed to have a good experience. The camping on the way up looked nice. In retrospect, I would have liked to earned the entire mountain rather than just the top half.

I know this is a long way off (I'm a planner) but I'm going this time next year November 2011:

The plan is to fly into Mexico City and climb volcanoes for 10-12days. Pico De Orizaba is the goal but want to bag other volcanoes to acclimatize to the altitude beforehand (La Malinche and Iztaccihuatl). If there is time I would also like to visit the Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico City. Right now I'm going solo, but if anybody would like to join me for all or even part of the trip PM me :)

Yes as much as I love being up in the mountains I would like to get some culture out of the trip aswell...any opinions on renting a car?

I know people don't recommend it, but I also want to be able to get from place to place as easy as possible and not worry about taxis and buses to find. If I was to Climb La Malinche first I would have to get a bus from Mexico city to the local town then taxi to the trailhead (including getting a taxi pickup the next day or evening) then all the way back to Mexico city...then bus to Iztaccihuatl, taxi to trailhead (and arrange pickup next day) then bus back to mexico city and all the way to pico de orizaba. Just sounds like to much travel time and no fun...where I could get directly to where I want to be by car and I do have a good gps...

Hey Rich, I wanted to PM you but for some strange reason your profile page does not come up properly on my computer right now. Could you send me a PM so I can try to reply to you?

Thanks, Matt.

Just a small FYI, I don't have personal experience with the bus system to Izta as I've never climbed it, but I believe there is a bus you could get from Izta straight to puebla then on to Tlachichuca, so you shouldn't have to go all the way back to Mexico City then to Tlachichuca. Sounds like a great trip! I will be on Orizaba for my second time this January 6-14 so if you have any questions pertaining to Orizaba feel free to ask.

We did this, taking buses from Amecameca to Puebla, then on to Tlachichuca. The buses in Mexico worked great, plus were cheap and comfortable. No problem carting big loads of gear.

Hola SPers,
I just got back from our little Mexico volcano trip (Nov 6-14) and everything went very smoothly and we tagged all 3 volcanoes as we had planned. We used OMG (Orizaba Mountain Guides) to drive us around and work out any permit/reservation/hut/hostel issues. El Oso and Maribel took really good care of us and we felt very safe on the whole trip. No water, GI issues or kidnapping/murder attempts to report……

I’m still adding captions, but here’s some photos for the time being
La Malinche (~14,650’) photos

Wow! What an awesome trip you had! The pictures are great and actually helped a lot with filling in some details....looks like the hut on orizaba has been fixed up too! Congrats on bagging all three peaks. The places you visited outside of climbing looked great and something I would definitely like to see aswell.

Hey,
I have recently returned from Mexico as well. We tagged Izta, Orizaba, and La Malinche. I found the public transportation to be just fine and very cheap. We also spent some time in Mexico city doing some touristy stuff and experiencing some of the culture.

You can view some pictures here:

If you have any questions regarding logistics or anything feel free to PM me.

Good luck and have fun! Mexico is awesome!
`Matt
