Getting a new headlamp after using my first one for 17 years. Need something suitable alpine climbing, general mountaineering. Done some looking but hoping to hear from SP'rs on their favorites/ones to avoid.

Do a seach in the forums for headlamps. There's quite a few threads about headlamps. Everyone likes something different and there are little pros and cons with all of them. I like the Mammut Lucido X-Zoom Headlamp although its a lot of money. Petzl and Mammut make really good ones just to get you started.

Black Diamond Spot is a pretty good one! I believe they have them on their web specials on the BD site, or they did a few weeks ago the last time I checked.

Spot is a great lamp. The only negative about it is the switch, which can accidentally turned on in your pack. However BD apparently fixed that with a switch lock for the 2011 model. It also uses AAA batteries: Wish it used AA so I don't have to carry spare batteries (my other electronics use AA).

I bought the Princeton Tec Apex but my friend bought the BD Icon. I really like the Icon way better than the Apex.

The Tx1 is probably the best headlamp on the market.... (last time I checked. I haven't checked out the new BD offerings).

My old Spot just died and good ole REI replaced it for free with the 2011 version. It now locks for travel. It is a terrific light! I used it last night on a training hike/climb and was very impressed.

BD Spot keeps coming up on steep and cheap for %50 off. In fact, it's up right now as I type.

I saw that its only 20.00. Although I'm sure its and older version. (2009,2010)

+1 for the Princeton Tec Icon. Long battery life and throws out good light, even on the low setting.

I have the BD Spot but more often opt for the BD Icon - lots of light is just so nice to have!

I have a Petzl Myo XP. That's the one with the separate battery pack connected by the cord.
I like it, got a pretty good deal on it, which is part of the reason I got it.
I like the separate battery pack, less bulk on the head, and purported to help batteries last longer in the cold. Have heard people say that cord could be problematic in the future, and honestly, it can be annoying, but for long days I just leave it on my helmet.

I also have a super cheapy energizer one, which works well too.

First i wouldn't buy anything that wasn't waterproof. I've had great luck with Princeton. I destroyed two of them, but Princeton replaced them ,no questions asked, and they should have told me to pound sand!
