Hello,

I've been using the same North Face Mountain-24 tent since 1994. It's a beautiful piece of equipment.
The rectangular foot print works well on smaller ledges or when you can only shovel out so much level ground at the end of the day. Also love it's low profile. It's a little on the heavy side though and I'm thinking of going with a sturdy 3 season tent.
Would really like to hear what kinds of tents you guys prefer for steep snow and technical routes, very cold, stormy conditions, wind, dumping snow. What's the lightest tent you would take on steep winter routes above 4000 meters?

Integral Designs MKI Lite or Bibler/Black Diamond I-Tent

Depending upon how tall you are, consider the Eldorado instead of the Itent. I use the Itent for just me, laying diagonal, and I'm about 6'1.

Black Diamond Firstlight has been a good tent for me.

Consider the Sierra Designs Convert 2. That Tent is awesome and can be had for a bargain. Waterproof with pretty good ventilation and comes with the zip off vestibule. Highly durable, versatile, awesomeness.

I have spent many a comfy night in the NEMO Tenshi.

I love it.

It has stood up to the winds of the Presidential range to the down pours of the Cascades.

Black diamond/ Bibler

Thank you for the link to your great blog. You answered a series of my questions about the Rab Summit Extreme.

I have used and loved Sierra Designs tents for about 20 years, but did buy a Black Diamond Fitzroy about two years ago. Not the lightest BD/Bibler tent around, but the larger size is great. I have had three big guys, skinny, but all around 6 feet tall, fit no problem inside, very little else though. With two people, the tent is massive inside, with tons of space for packs and gear.

I would have loved to have gotten the SD Convert (did I mention I love SD tents , but I needed a light and strong 3 person tent for expedition climbing in the Yukon. I think SD may have a Convert 3 tent now, but back in 2008 there was only the 2 man.

The Fitzroy performed very well in high winds and big snow falls up to about 5000 metres in the Yukon. Back home in the Canadian Rockies, I have used the Fitzroy both summer and winter mountaineering and love it. It does pack very small and I have never had condensation issues. If you do not require the extra space, go for the Convert 2 or the BD I-tent.
