I am planning to go to Spruce Knob however the mountains' page has no trip reports or route descriptions. It says that there is lots of trails or that you can drive up. I am looking for like a nice half day hike but I know nothing of the area or the many different options. I'd rather not just walk up the road as that isn't any fun. Anyone able to help?
The high point book I own says there's mainly two ways up. The drive up and a 11 mile hike up (22 miles round trip). I did that last spring and did it in two days one night. Very nice hike. The details I got were in this book.
Another question. Is there anywhere to stay around there the night before? Like a Best Western or something and any decent place to get some food. Will be doing PA and MD highpoints the night before so coming from north direction if that matters. Its a snowing friday and i like to plan months in advance.
If coming from the north then your best bet is probably in Petersburg, WV...I know there are some reasonably nice single-room hunting cabins just outside of town, and maybe a no-name motel or two in town. There are a couple diners you can choose to eat at, or hit mcdonalds, sheetz, etc. You ARE in the middle-of-nowhere WV afterall, so keep expectations low.
It will be cold, windy, and snowy on Spruce, so plan accordingly. Enjoy the hike!
