Thicker socks or two soles in your boots?

by aran » Tue Jan 18, 2011 6:24 pm

Hi all, newbie here.

I'm trying to make some boots work that may be a bit big... I picked up some Trango Extreme Evo's at REI used sale- they had never been used, great price IMHO. I wear a street 8.5 and these are 9.5s. I wore them this weekend climbing around Echo Lakes in Tahoe with a thin wool sock and a thick hiking wool sock over that. They were pretty good- they weren't snug, my heel moved a bit, but no blisters and didn't stop me climbing some cracks. But if I had my druthers they'd be 42s rather than 42.5s, but can't really afford to get them right now. Down the line I'll try and get a better fit with another boot, but for now, any suggestions to make it work?

Punchline: should I get some thick mountaineering socks/ double up on thicker socks and try and fill the little extra space, or has anyone ever put superfeet soles in on top of the stock soles (rather than instead of) to eliminate some volume in the boot? Suggestions?

Hope this isn't a waste of your time!

aran ... i used the nepal evos with smartwool or patagucci mountaineering socks and a thin liner sock

id try the thicker sock first IMO ... as long as your feet arent sweating .... buy it from REI and return it if it doesnt work ...

Thanks bearbreeder and fletch. I swung by REI and picked up the thickest socks- with a thick liner the boots feel nice with only the superfeet, not doubling up the soles. Doubling up the soles filled some volume but reduced the heel cup area so it was harder to lock in. Thanks for the tips, much appreciated!

look at the positive side ... with the thicker insulation you have colder weather boots ;)

think of it as gore shell boots with removable liners ...
