Animal Identification

by SoCalHiker » Wed Jan 19, 2011 6:39 pm

Hi all, I stumbled last weekend in Vasquez Rocks County Park over this little fellow. It was about 3 feet long and I did not see (and hear) any rattles.

Does anybody know for sure what snake species that is? Thanks.

It doesn't look like a viper species to me since head doesn't seem big enough. I would guess a gopher snake.

Also known as a Bull snake. And, that's NO bull ...

I agree its a gopher snake. http://www.californiaherps.com is a great website for identifying reptiles and amphibians.
