In 1984 Japan's Naomi Uemura climbed the West Buttess, but vanished on the descent between 16000 and 18200 feet (February)

Update from the Minneapolis Star and Trib.

Brutal weather conditions have hampered the efforts of a Minnesota man who's trying to become the first solo climber to reach the summit of Alaska's Mount McKinley in January.

Lonnie Dupre of Grand Marais is stuck at about 17,000 feet on the highest mountain in North America. He's spent six nights in a tiny snow trench to escape the battering 100 mph winds.

Dupre is hoping for a break in the weather Tuesday or Wednesday and plans to descend to his camp at about 14,000 feet to regroup.

The Duluth News Tribune reports Dupre is also dealing with a 5.4 magnitude earthquake that may have changed the mountain's landscape. McKinley's peak is 20,320 feet.

What a pussy. One-hundred mile-per-hour winds never stopped me.

He is back in Minneapolis and has given up his attempt. He says he just never got the window he needed.

Deb and all, that's the last piece of news about him: Lonnie Dupre retreats to BC-> http://www.explorersweb.com/everest_k2/ ... p?id=19917

100mph winds and -50ºC got him stuck in a tiny snow trench at 17,200 feet for six days before finally forcing him back down.
