Idaho Ideas

by MattGreene » Sat Apr 16, 2011 3:44 pm

I love Idaho. I've been there twice, and will be going back in mid to late July to climb with some friends at the City of Rocks and in the Sawtooth Mountains and beyond. I'm looking for some fresh ideas - long routes in the 5.6-5.8 range (I'll likely only have partners for 1-2 "big" climbs), fun scrambles in the 3rd class to low 5th class range, and at least one 50-80 mile backpack that could be combined with peaks. I'll be driving to Glacier NP after the Sawtooths, so anything along that stretch would be perfect.

I've already done the Open Book on the Finger of Fate, the Mountaineers Route on Elephant's Perch, the Stur Chimney on Heyburn, several scrambles on El Capitan, a traverse of Parks Peak, four of the Seven Devils, and Borah.

I own Lopez's Climbing Guide, which is a fantastic book. I like his philosophy of providing short objective route descriptions. However, Idaho is more than 2000 miles from my home (PA), so I'd like to make the best use of my time and focus on routes that are absolute classics. Above all else I enjoy long class 4 routes on solid rock. I know, there's not a whole lot in Idaho that's "solid". The Sawtooth page here on SummitPost is very informative and well done, but I'd like to hear what other ideas you have. Thanks!

Here area couple of specific ideas:
Class 4 scramble: Sacagawea in the Lost Rivers

Wilderness rock climb: Warbonnet
http://www.summitpost.org/warbonnet-peak/151830

Longer rock climbs: Goat Perch or Slick Rock

Low class 5 solitude: Brocky Peak or Mustang Peak

The backpack opportunities are limited only by your imagination. Or follow the link from Delta and ask the locals.

Why have I not climbed in Idaho? It looks pretty freakin' awesome. My next road trip is going to be to the Sawtooths and City of Rocks.

I appreciate all the great ideas. Warbonnet is tops on my list. I offered to watch my buddy's kids so he can take his wife up the Mountaineer's route. Hopefully she'll return the favor by letting him free for a night to backpack in and climb Warbonnet with me. I wish I'd posted this topic 5 years ago before my first trip to Idaho. I spent 2 days in McCall, and all I did was swim! Slickrock would've been a perfect day out.

The Rakers should be on any 'climbers' list... it's so remote and seldom visited... Should be seen in your Lopez book.
