I personally could not reconcile this image with Mount St. Elias after looking at a considerable number of pictures of it on the web, nevertheless I appreciate those of you who took the time to consider the question.

Yes, that is what it looks like when you fly by going SE from Anchorage. One of the reasons you want a window seat on that flight.

Folks, this IS Makalu, 8,463 m in the Khumbu Himalaya, worlds 5th highest peak.
Not St. Elias.

I agree with Noondueler. My first reaction upon seeing REM's photo was Makalu, but then when I saw Xue Sheng's image I thought St. Elias. However, the two photos are definitely not of the same peak. The features of the main ridge are clearly different between the two. REM's photo is of Makalu, and Xue Sheng's image is of St. Elias.

If you hover over the photo in the link, it says that it is Everest, but as Noondueler says it is definately Makalu. The Southeast Ridge is the one facing the viewer.

If anyone has the book, check the top photo on page 117 of On Top of the World by John Cleare. It will confirm this perfectly.

If the photo would have been taken from the Mt. Everest direction, everyone would have recognised it instantly (since so many photos from Everest show Makalu), but this photo was taken from the SE.

Funny story, 5 years later I still have this photo on my wall (in a new home on a different side of the country) but still didn't know what it was. I took a photo and posted it on the "WhereIsThis" subreddit asking for help. Then I did a GIS image search of the pic I took and bam, this thread popped up where I had posted it years ago and now I see your answer (that I hadn't seen before). Thanks! Looks like you're totally correct! I can finally put this nagging thing to rest!
