Gannett 2011

by Monopole » Thu Jul 07, 2011 1:28 pm

I'm heading out to Pinedale next week, hoping to take on Gannett from the South. Anyone read any trip reports from this year (or got any beta to contribute)? I'm expecting more snow than usual, but it would still be good to know: (i) where the snowline is, (ii) what the condition of snowbridges on crevasses and the schrund are like, (iii) is there anyone else headed out there?

I am headed out there on June 17th with Summit for Someone, we will be hiking the grand tetons prior for warm up. We will be on the grand on the 12th. I will try and jump on between the two and post any info i know if your still around.

Splattski: Thanks for the TR.

Pyroman: I think we might run into your group along the way, especially if you're heading up from Elkhart Park. We start on the 16th evening, but will be stopping at Indian Basin for a day or two to climb some rock routes before moving camp to Titcomb.

I'll be up there next week.

Does anyone know if Elkhart Park is accessible yet?

Accessible as in the road being snow-free? I believe it is. I spoke to someone at Jackson Hole Mtn Guides today, hoping to get some route beta. They had taken a group out to Gannett from Elkhart Park last week (and are taking another group out this week), so I imagine the trailhead is accessible. Apparently, the first 6-7 miles are very muddy, after which the snow starts. The big stream crossing before Seneca Lake is tricky because of high waters - hiking poles will be handy there, I imagine. From there on, there's lots of snow, but it's mostly hard packed along the trail (for at least the first half of the day), so travel gets better after that. Summary: Lots of mud to start, lots of snow to finish, crevasses and schrund are well covered.

We did Gannett at the end of June last year during the big final meltoff. Used snowshoes from Photographer's Point in, but were able to walk much of the way out. Here's some resources we found useful:

For snow conditions, here's the Hobbs Park snotel at 10k':

And this picture shows a crossing for Seneca Creek uphill from the trail:

I usually only get into the Northeastern Winds but looking at them almost every day thought I'd share a pic from a drive over Union Pass yesterday.

Any recent condition updates from Gannett and Titcomb Basin? Wondering how much snow is there and if we should bring real boots. Planning to be there next week... Thanks!
