The problem is that you can easily get yourself in a heap of shit. When you do you will endanger not only yourself but those who will come to rescue you. Get some professional instruction and don't go alone.

Wow! Not as ugly as last year this time, but dang. Hope Azzy is enjoying himself on his travels up north whether he summitted or not. I'm looking forward to stepping on Shasta this weekend! :D

I kind of get Steve1215's point but only the one I think he unintentionally made. Rock climbing and mountaineering are very different skills and proficiency on rock doesn't always translate to an ability to travel safely in the mountains (and vice versa). I remember when checking in with the rangers before climbing Rainer, my partner and I discussed our pretty extensive rock climbing background and the they told us that they're particularly wary of people like us since we have the technical skill to get ourselves in a serious pickle but can lack the mountain experience to get ourselves out. (We actually had some peak experience too, my partner especially).

Given that avvy, or whatever his name is, doesn't even have a climbing background, he's even that much more poorly equipped to get up and down safely, other than relying on his fitness and good luck. Hope he's well and had a nice time to boot, whatever he did.

The only point I got from Steve's rant was that rock climbers are awesome and everyone else is a pussy wannabe mountaineer. Don't they have forum's for rock climbers to talk about how extreme they are, or is summitpost it...

A reminder, Azzy probably made it.

I think most Himalayan climbers would acknowledge some of the climbs are "just" long slogs. Others require rock climbing skill... with mittens, plastic boots, crampons, Michelin-man clothes, hypoxia, and slick snow.

Nothing Azzy posted convinces me that he has the right kitten-rescue skills.

Superman only defeated Frankenstein because he was able to fly -- and I saw this at Palisades Park. We argued about this for hours, when I was 9.

I ask you: has Lynn Hill ever rescued a kitten? Huh? Huh, Mr. Smarty-pants?

Hey Steve, so was Daria a rock climber or mountain climber?

You're not going to get Steve to speak ill about the love of his life Kevin.

I strongly disagree. Perhaps Ms. Hill could climb all 14 8,000m peaks, unguided, without supplemental oxygen, or perhaps she'd die in short order (which I think is considerably more probable). There's no way to say with any certainty and in either case, it would be far from "somewhat easily" accomplished. Mental toughness, ultra-athleticism and determination are precisely the qualities that get people killed every year in the big mountains, especially the determination part. But the skills that keep you alive in the mountains are not learned by leading a 5.12b on some crag in Yosemite. If you want to shit on being guided to the top of Everest, be my guest, I'm right there with you. Most of the skills needed to safely ascend and descend big mountains will be provided for you by the experienced guide, and yes, in that case it may be as simple as putting one foot in front of the other with "determination, ultra-athleticism and mental toughness". But I take exception to the notion that climbing a mountain in the wilderness (unguided)is simply a longer, but easier version of climbing a rock pitch. You're comparing apples and oranges and apparently for no other reason than to offend.

Steve is approaching The Chief as one of my favorite SP characters. he'll still need to step up his douchbaggery a tab bit.

Azzy,

Ohhh Aaaazzy! Ollie-Ollie Oxen-Free! Where's the trip report? Inquiring minds need to know! Summit or not, there's no shame in trying. Don't fear the flames that you'll surely be subjected to. After 8 pages of discussion, debate and controversy please post and give us some closure.

Post now or be cast into the abyss with the other trolls who have dared to deceive on SP.
