you can have 1:24k, 1:100k, and 1:250k for free for all states in the usa, and free much more capable software than topo.

QGIS is an open source GIS program, every state has free scanned topos <---all the California Topos for free as well as tons of other stuff.

I know those, I've already printed some for a trip, just remember to keep those printouts in a waterproof map-case.

I just wanted to find an easy way to modify existing Garmin Maps like Ibycus's.

I've got a Garmin GPSMAP 62s, quite happy with it!
got a bunch of maps on the 8GB card I put on it.
