Wheeler Peak, NM: trail closures?

by rachelgirl » Thu Jul 07, 2011 5:23 am

Hi. I am planning an attempt to summit Wheeler Peak in New Mexico within a couple of weeks, but heard that the trails were closed due to the fires. My goal is to start hiking from Taos... Curious: has anyone made any attempts to summit this beautiful place within the last month? If so, will you please let me know if your attempts were via the Taos side of the mountain or the Red River side?

Also, what were the trails like? Water availability? etc.?

Thanks!!!

I clilmbed Wheeler June 26th from the Taos side. Trail was good and mostly snow free. I wasn't looking specifically for water but I think you could refill maybe up too 12K. not positive on that.

I've been informed that all trails in that area are now closed because of fires.

The Questa ranger district, i.e. Wheeler Peak, is accessible now.

It's at Stage 2, which means it is OPEN but with some restrictions on fire, etc.

Right (and no welding either...) Obviously, it would be wise to call the ranger station to check current conditions before you go.

Thanks Alpinist, just trying to clarify...

I just talk to the ranger district today because I will be down there next weekend and the ristrictions are easing even more on Monday. I believe you are allowed to smoke in your vehicle at level 2 :)

Can one of you post a message on conditions when you get back? I'll be out there in Sept. Hopefully the fires missed the immediate area around Wheeler.

Thanks Fletch. What about below treeline and around the trailhead?
