I always hear about how there is no color in the White Mountains. Guess you just have to look a little harder...

Kathy, I am sure your 4WD would get further in to Cottonwood/Crooked Creek, but the colors are really peaking now. Cottonwood Basin looks like a really fun place to explore, though!

Cottonwood looks beautiful right now. I've been working right by Schulman Grove all week (you might have seen me and my crew working) but haven't been able to get down to see any of the aspens. I remember seeing some tiny aspen groves near the top of Silver Canyon, maybe I'll commute that way from now on...

It looks like I'll miss peak in the Whites as I can't hit the road before October 6th. Darn

I'm thinking of heading across Nevada to the Schell Creek Range and the Snake Range, then into Utah on 50 stopping at Notch Peak along the way to the Mount Nebo area. From there I'll work my to Cedar City, Zion NP, Sin City, and home to SoCal. Maybe I won't be too late in at least one of those areas.

Sabrina is simply gorgeous right now, with a good start on the color but still plenty of green. There's a great patch just above Aspendell to start, but the town itself is still lush:

Below the dam there's probably 50% color to green:

The lake itself is putting on a wonderful show at the moment:

North Lake has good color on the road as you get to the lake, but it's still pretty green through the campground. I could see patches up higher on the slopes towards Piute, but I turned around at the trailhead like a good patient...

And looking into the Sabrina Basin from the North Lake road:

Now, make sure to stop into the Cardinal Village Resort for lunch. Peeping is a high-calorie workout! <ahem>

(OK, I feel like a total touron right now wandering aimlessly with my camera but so be it...)

I stopped in at McGee the same day as the Glass Mountains (Monday?) and there was almost nothing there yet. I'll try to stop in on this Monday as I head to Carson City. :)

Another area I'd be really interested in, but probably can't get there is Horton Lakes...

Yesterday and this morning above 10K in the Crabtree Basin behind (westside of Whitney) during my 34.8 mile in/out (in less than 33 hours) resupply for Peninsula ...

*** Remember that the "Colors" are way different at or above 10K than they are down below treeline.

Took an easy stroll up to Tyee Lakes today with friends to see what's happening with the color. Good stuff right along the road to South Lake, as well as the slopes of Table Mountain, but there's still a good bit of green at the first lake. Much more color from the smaller plants all around...

Headed north yesterday on my way to Carson City. June Lake loop is still all green, as is Lundy Canyon. So I explored the good dirt road that connects Virginia Lakes Rd and Green Creek Rd just south of Bridgeport:

And I'm officially back to work so I won't get to wander quite so much... :(

Although some color contrast w/ new snow would be loverly!

I would second the Dunderberg Mt. belt road (Humbolt-Toiyabe). I drove it last July for the first time and plan to explore it further in the next few weeks. There is a ridge spur road to the east, separating Bridgeport from Mono, where I spent an impromtu evening watching the moon dart between heavy cumulonimbus in a lightning filled sky. Truly a top of the world feeling.

By the way, easily accessible Eastern Sierra fall color, below 10K, usually peaks during the last half of October, depending on elevation. Not that I actually shoot much of it, in color.
