Definitely, Tom!

Are you going by yourself or with a group? Who are you using for logistics?

By my self... Using Grajales for airport pick up/permit and last minute supplies and a trip to the TH. I'm not using mules so that's basically it. Very friendly and fast service via email at least. See you at BC maybe.

Hi guys,

I want to climb Aconcagua in January/February 2012. I'm a bit uncomfortable to sign up for a private climb with a commercial organization. I really like to climb in a group and I'm looking for buddies to do this together. The type of people I'm looking for can look after themselves and behave with social grace around others (=don't grump around but enjoy nature and eachother's company). I have no idea where and how to find such people... help! :)

Some background info about me: I am a bit of a newbie to hiking/climbing. I did the Three Peaks of Yorkshire and Kilimanjaro this year (without much difficulty). On both occasions I teamed up with friends who had the same level of expertise as me (=none at the time :D). Me and my friends are fit people who work out several times a week, but the hiking / climbing was a whole different experience. In retrospect, it was quite dangerous as some people didn't seem very conscious of their physical state and could not adjust their behavior to what would have been appropriate on the mountain. The results: blackouts, puking, crying, panic attacks... it wasn't pretty.

After these experiences, I'm a bit afraid to end up on a more dangerous mountain with people who are not very realistic about their capabilities and have a high chance on getting hurt physically and/or emotionally. I would feel very bad if anything happened. Also, I just want to enjoy the experience and I don't want to worry about others all the time.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks! :)

Our trip (3 people) to the mountain was interrupted due to my problems with acclimatization at the base camp in Plaza Argentina. Low SO2 and moderate to severe HACE. Got helicoptered out to the Horcones Valley TH after Sebastian (medic on duty) requested it. We had fine weather all the way to the BC. Met Kurt Wedberg on the trail. Will come back next time.

I´m climbing Aconcagua on the normal route this January. I´ll do it by myself, just with the help of a mule to bring my gear to basecamp. My plan is to arrive in Mendoza around the 11.01.2011, then acclimatise in Cordon del Plata and head for Basecamp around the 20.01.2011. I´m basically looking for people to lower the costs for the mule - and if our paces and personalities fit together we might as well climb Aconcagua together.

@ Bo 1981
A great place to acclimatise and get to know yourself and the people with you is Cordon del Plata, mentioned above. It´s close to Mendoza with several easy summits up to aproximately 6000m (Cerro Plata). A topographic map is easily available in Mendoza. Two years ago, public transports went from Mendoza to Portrerillos, from there you had to hitchhike or take a taxi to Vallecitos.

Does anyone have info regarding the 2012 climbing fees for 2012? I still find only the 2011 fee (ARS3000 for high season). I read about a possible increase of 10%. Does anyone know?
