In May we are off to cross on foot the island of Madagascar in 21 days. We are really looking forward to taking on the Island's tallest peak Maromokotro (2,876m).

Maromokotro is situated in the Tsaratanana Massif in the north of Madagascar. Although the massif is not at a hugely impressive altitude, it is an extremely isolated region where very few people have established settlements.

What do people thing about taking on these much lesser known but extremely isolated mountains as opposed to their much bigger and popular cousins??

Is it more adventurous to take on the very remote but smaller mountains or are they different beasts entirely??

I insist that you post a detailed report with photos and tales of adventure for this particular peak here at SP. I need the vicarious pleasure.

The smaller, more remote peaks have their own adventure since very few people seek to climb them. Logistically, some may be tougher than the big, famous peaks we all hear about. You may be one of just a handful of people world-wide to have (a) climbed the Madagascar highpoint and (b) have even heard of it. Be safe and have fun!

Logistically it is going to be very challenging due to the sheer remoteness of the place but it all adds to the adventure. We will be sure to leave no trace that we were ever there. We very much understand our responsibilities in this respect.

If you're "set up" like Bear Grylls and have your own support crew and television show, then I guess it would be a cool thing to participate in ...

Most folks I know only hit the major ones, because they have to work nine to five, and in their spare time they'd rather be on more popular summits.

I don't give a damn one way or another ... to each his own.

Well we did it!! 283 kms in 19 days. And we climbed the Island's tallest mountain, Maromokotro in the process!

By the way most of the guys who came worked 9-5 jobs they just took off three weeks to do this one so it can be done!
