Partners for Weekend Hood Summit

by ascasson » Thu May 10, 2012 10:59 pm

Hi folks,

It's very short notice, but a partner and I are looking for one or two more people to join us on a SS Hood climb this Saturday (May 12). We have a rope. I'm a beginner, but he has a lot of snow climbing experience -- just a heads-up. We will be heading to Timberline tomorrow (Friday) afternoon and start the climb between midnight and 1 a.m.

Let me know if you're interested or know someone who is.

Cheers!

Anthony

P.S. Message me if you'd like to go another time as I'll be interested in climbing Hood again if others want to. Or any other mountain. Now I'm drifting away from the point....oh well.

Sorry to hear that, weather is great, but it is a smart choice. The mountain will be there next weekend, and the next...

Serious Spring
It’s almost mid-May and snowdepths are dropping—
Temperatures are climbing and La Niña is stopping.
But still lots of snow left to warm, melt and settle—
A natural process in which you don’t want to mettle.
Glide cracks and cornices are opening and falling—
And require extra care so its not you they are mauling.
There is ample wet snow that slides gouge and entrain—
Forming big debris piles and maybe death or great pain.
And a large spring slide cycle may yet be in the works—
As ripe snow by the ton on steep slopes still lurks.
Light winds, sun and warmth may be great for your mind—
But are not so good for the snowpack you’ll find.
With freezing levels reaching 12K or higher—
From Saturday thru Monday in wet snow you will mire.
Avoid slopes beneath cornices, and in chutes don’t stay—
Or if you must go there, travel fast and pray.
Avalanches starting and flowing from higher elevations—
Have growth and descent as part of their equations.
So take time, care and thought when you travel this spring—
For snow seeking its source some trauma may bring.

I climbed to 8,100 ft and snowboarded down Friday, 5-11-12.

I could see two rope teams of 5 climbers each descending the old chute. Other climbers likely summited and returned earlier.
I talked to one climber and he said there was no avalance danger. Hmmmm...

Yes, according to my original climb group -- from which I was removed for safety reasons (group size) -- everything was "fine." And, yes, I was slightly bummed.

But personally, I'm fine with being cautious. Being cautious is what has kept my mentors alive after decades of climbing.
