Rae Lakes Loop Next Week (5/22)

by jareds » Fri May 18, 2012 5:26 am

Looking for info on the Rae Lakes loop, a buddy wants to do it.

Anyone been there recently?
Wondering if snowshoes would be needed, if we're gonna be fighting with downed trees the whole way still, etc.

Thanks!

I haven't been in King's Canyon National Park,...but, three weeks ago I backpacked into an area only twenty miles north of there (in the John Muir Wilderness),...up to about 10,700 ft. elevation. It was an extremely light winter snowpack, and, there was hardly any significant snow anywhere (except on a few steep, north facing slopes). Since then it's been hot up here,...very summer-like. I would guess that conditions would be optimal. We've had some windy conditions here along the eastern Sierra,...so, I would consider that the worst-case scenario.

I traversed from Onion Valley to Road's End on 26 May. Granted, there fell about 6" of snow but I'm sure it's melted up to 11K'. No snow under 7K' at the time either. Can't imagine that snow coverage will be on issue in a month, ALTHOUGH it most always snows 3-4 July. :)

We will be doing the Rae Lakes loop July 5 - July 10 (spending two nights at Rae Lakes). Hope to meet some of you out there!
