Twin Peaks and Stanford Rock?

by hgrapid » Sun Jun 03, 2012 11:23 pm

After losing Mike White's book about Reno-Tahoe hikes, I cannot figure out how to get to Twin Peaks without hiking for 7 miles or so, or possibly getting lost on some crazy dirt road north of Ward Creek.

On the existing page: http://www.summitpost.org/twin-peaks/476605 - it mentions a 4.6 mile route. If such a route exists, wonderful! I sent a message to the page owner. But the maps I see do not delineate such a simple route, and I am concerned, given I plan to lead a group to do the hike, and cannot figure this out.

Has anyone hiked this route?

I think that route isn't actually from Alpine Meadows- it just involves driving back all the way on Ward Creek Blvd and skipping the couple miles the TRT parallels the creek.
(If you look at the USGS quad for the area, its marked as a "4WD" road- though the TRT substantially deviates from the old trail on that map)

The shortest approach appears to be that Blackwood Canyon route from the south tho- that's also on the Topo and appears to leave from right past the Barker Pass road turnout.

We just did this 12-mile loop that includes Twin Peaks and Stanford Rock in half a day on Sunday. You'll still have some snow on the way to Twin Peaks. Very nice views from Twin, you can skip the pile of stones that's called Stanford Rock - no views.
As mentioned above, the best way to get to Twin is via TRT from the Ward Creek Blvd. It's about 5.5 to 6 miles to the top from the trailhead. There were very nice map print outs at the trailhead.
Enjoy.

Um if there were no views then you weren't on Stanford Rock.

Thanks guys. We are taking 15N35 Road that crosses Ward Creek, going up to Stanford Rock, then Twin Peaks, then down the TRT. Should be fun!

Thanks folks. We did the loop yesterday. Actually Vladislav was correct. At the actual pile of rocks that some refer to as Stanford Rock, there are no views. But, 1/8th of a mile north is the actual Stanford Rock, where there are incredible views as shown by fedak. We measured 14 miles for all summits (including both the pile of rocks and the actual Stanford Rock, and both of the Twin Peaks summits.

I created a page for the loop hike: http://www.summitpost.org/twin-peaks-stanford-peak-loop-hike/795559
