A friend once asked my dog and I to sleep at the foot of his tent due to his fear of bears along the Lost Coast Trail (we had bear cannisters, but had seen tracks and scat near where we set up camp). Fortunately the night was uneventful and his gun had no need to be drawn.

One of the big bear issues in CA has to do with using dogs to hunt them...
http://www.mercurynews.com/science/ci_20826406/bear-hunting-battle-hunters-animal-rights-groups-face

...the other has to do with global warming.

I expect more angry bears as battles ensue over beachfront territory. Eventually, Arizona may see some spillover. http://www.mercurynews.com/science/ci_20917927/california-faces-more-serious-risk-sea-level-rise

Don't say I didn't warn you!

Most of sea level rise can be traced to the increasing obesity of people living near the coast, who cause the land to sink. If bears are recruited for reality TV shows, they will be gainfully employed, will not need to enter urban areas for food, and will be able to limit some of the most annoying people on the planet.

So, this has (already) turned into a political ("hot-bed") issue.

But, you're right! If we find a place for bears to earn a living, raise their self-esteem, and limit some of the most annoying people on our Planet ....

Hmmmm ..... :!: .......

This is getting serious ..

http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/region_northern_az/payson/man-injured-in-3rd-bear-attack-in-payson-area

"Stoltenberg tells ABC15 her husband used a handgun to fire several shots at the bear at close range. The bear left the area and Stoltenberg says it's unlikely the bear was hit by any of the bullets."

Apparently, not a very good shot ..... :? ??

And luckily ..

"What may have saved the victim is that an off-duty emergency medical technician was camping nearby and had his gear with him. The EMT wrapped the head wounds with gauze and inserted an IV on the man, according to a witness."

My question ... WHY did authorities REOPEN the campground if they already knew there was a rogue bear in the area ???

Three dumb guys go bear hunting. They're driving down the road and they see a sign that says "Bear Left." So they go home.

Because people would bitch if they didn't.

I camped in a CG farther north of Payson (Sitgreaves NF, and too far for a rogue bear to amble in a day) the weekend after the first bear attack, and the local claim was that with the drought and poor rainfall this winter, the bears are low on food. So low as to make even people from Phoenix seem appetizing? Well, most bears have their standards, but obviously one didn't.

This explains something I read recently: the sea level rise is greater on the east coast than anywhere else. Obviously, since we have more people gaining weight!

If only Arizona had more liberal concealed weapons laws, bears would not be a problem.

Duh. If the bear sees the gun, instead of charging head-on, he'll sneak up from behind and hit you over the head with a coconut.
