Just Moved to Albuquerque

by birdhead » Wed Aug 08, 2012 4:10 am

I started a thread on Boise vs. Albuquerque a while back and decided to move to ABQ based on a superior job fit. Anyhow, I am loving the hiking in the Sandias so far. I have hiked Cienega trail, Tree Spring trail, and Embudito trail to South Sandia Peak in the first week and am surprised by how green some of the areas are. I'm hoping to meet some partners based in ABQ for day hiking, mountaineering, and moderate climbing in ABQ, Santa Fe, Durango, and other areas of New Mexico/Colorado. I mainly enjoy day hikes to peaks in the class 2-4 range but occasionally still get on a rope.

When the weather gets cooler, try Cabezon, Ladrone.

Welcome to New Mexico! That previous thread told you about all our problems, but there's sure a lot to like here too. Come up to the Sangres when you get a chance, and be sure to check out the maple groves in the Manzanos around the second week of October.

I grew up in Albuquerque, and it sounds like you are already off to a good start. There is a hiking club there, as well as a SAR team, but I can't remember the name of either (a Google or just asking around might find them).

BTW, don't miss the aspens in the Sandias in the fall. You hit the right day and it's just gorgeous fields of color.

The Knife's Edge on Sandia Peak is a classic, take a rope on your first attempt.

The scamble up Cabezon is also a classic.

Do you run? There's a big trail running group in the area, and an active Hashing club.

Have a breakfast burrito at Frontier for me.

You know ... I keep hearing about all the problems associated with living in a specific geographical area, but LIFE is what you make it, no matter WHAT path you choose.

Except living anywhere in Arizona. Right now, I'm more prone to sample a stiff shot of Vodka, than to have to go outside into the 110-degree heat .... 8)

Best of luck in Albuquirk !

Ah, the Frontier. That was a staple on many numerous trips between Texas and California when I was in grad school in Dallas. Those cinnamon rolls are amazing. I really, really miss being so close to New Mexico.
