Are ya gonna include your SAR pics?

Classic!

My partner and I never needed a SAR on any of our trips. Butitsadryheat is making fun of Daria here. Must be hard to get his humor for you, my friend. Hope you can make it to the show to find out if I led any pitches. You can carpool with Laura (would be awesome if you could make it Laura!), it's a shame you guys are neighbors and did not form a friendly bond yet! 8)

Now, now, anita, how can we feel good about our own accomplishments unless we belittle the accomplishments of others?

Never mind.

Ya'll have fun now.....

Here is a little tid bit of history:

Norman Clyde once gave a presentation to a Bay Area Sierra Club Peaks Section Meeting. A month later, David Brower, who four years later ultimately became the first Executive Director of the Sierra Club, fired his ass as their Lead Guide. Years later, Norman was asked about this incident and he quickly replied, "Seems their gratitude for my dedicated services to their program was not one bit what I assumed it would be. I have been known to be foolishly trusting at times."

Not sure how that relates to my slide show. I have not done much reading about NC, but heard he got fired from school where he taught for shooting at some kids that played a joke on him. Was he fired from 'lead guide' position for the same action, or was it for something different?

I am sure many can apply this quote to a lot in their life. It is not unusual to get burned by others, especially when you are trying to help them. Not many people out there are honest and well mannered. Most just want to use you and screw you over if it benefits them in any way.

IIRC Clyde was fired for leaving a client to fend for himself after falling down a snowfield, because he felt the client had made a stupid mistake. I get the feeling the guy rarely worked well with others.

IRC: The client in question was hostile and refused to follow Norman's directions from the get go. On the route in question, the client decided to part from the group and ascend a far harder and more direct line than what Norman and the group had decided to take. He basically told Norman to fk off and told Norman/group that he was no longer part of the group. Within 30 or so minutes, the client got himself in a rather precarious pos, way over his head, slipped and took a ride.

Irony of this story, not more than a month after being fired by Brower, who does Brower beg and plea with to go find this fella....

Old Norman.

Here's another little tidbit. The Sierra Club frowns on the abandonment of trip participants. Brower didn't have much choice.

Norman Clyde was an extraordinary man, but not a perfect man.

edit for spelling!

I'm still hunting for the story, not easy to find. BTW, Norman bailed on Dulley, too, don't forget.

My understanding is that Clyde was fired from his teaching post after firing "at" some kids joy-riding in his car. Someone is said to have quipped later that he if Clyde had really been shooting at them, someone would have been hit.
