For me its been 8+ yrs.

1) to get myself into trouble. Photo's always get me into trouble. Some guys are into pornography, me... A picture of a beautiful mountain, a sunrise from up high, a mountain lake with its emerald blues with ice at its edges, a mountain meadow, desert canyons, remote mountains and its people, a perfect crack splitting a headwall. i guess its my porn, and it probably does more damage since it forms more plans then anything else.

2) the family. We may bicker, make fun of each other. But when someone has misfotunes, members will often give emotional support( as well as electonic media can), and when someone has something to celebrate, people will be there also. Just a normal family. A family of such diverse experiences from people looking how to start to the Ricks ( aka The Chief, aka A5) to Dane ( aka http://www.coldthistle.com) and many others from all parts of the world, including those from Eastern and Western Europe, Asia,.... A truly international family.

3) a bit of humor... God, I wish there were more Brits on the site.

I'm glad I've met a few, Dow, Brutus of Wyde before his passing....to name a few. Of those i've met, I only have good things to say.

Couple months shy of 11 yrs. I think what SP has going for it over other climbing sites (besides Dow’s beta …& yes, many others’ too) is the international nature of the beast. Things like mountainproject are (at least so far) primarily driven by American climbers with focus on the more or less standard list of climbing venues around the world where American climbers tend to go. SP is broader. Met & were GREATLY assisted with climbing info. by folks like Parofes, Runawayrainbow, and a few others. Not so active now but still value my membership here. And the photos from around the world are just food for daydreams.

Turned 11 on Oct. 5. SP's an escape while I'm in the low lands; an outstanding source for planning trips, especially to the Sierra Nevada; and a constant source of entertainment in the forums.

Most of all, it's a place where I find members willing to kick in with information when I make a query on a particular area. I try to do the same when I can.

I've only met one SP'r in person, had the pleasure to meet The Chief/ASRP when we dropped off fuel we couldn't take on the plane at Sierra Mountaineering. Would love to meet more.

I'm nearly 10 SP years old.

This site has been an incredible source of mountain related info and I often find myself sitting and reading instead of hiking and biking. Oh, well... I often feel humbled by the submissions and incredible accomplishments of many other members. There are some really gifted mountaineers, writers and photographers here.

I also find myself researching through my old journals, field notes and photographs in an effort to create my own submissions... again, instead of hiking and biking. I don't seem to have much self discipline anymore.

It would be fun to meet other members in real life and maybe I have without realizing it (on those occasions when I do get out to hike and bike). Maybe Summitpost should sell merchandise such as SP hats, SP tee-shirts, or SP patches that should be worn on trips so we can recognize each other if we should accidentally meet on a trail or a mountaintop. Hmmm... I think I just realized what it's like to want to join a gang...

OMG!!!

Just eight days ago, on October 19, 2012, I celebrated my third year of being a SummitPost member. And I must say, of the enthusiasm I felt back then in 2009 already, nothing at all has gone lost!! SummitPost is a wonderful site, full of valuable information, marvelous people (I wonder when I'll finally meet one of you in person!!!!!!), beautiful and many times simply incredible photography...Just to give you one example out of many: it's for the largest part through SP that I learned just how awesome Utah, Colorado, California and other places in the USA are. I knew nothing before about Cathedral valley, for instance...and when I saw the first pics here on SP I was absolutely thunderstruck!!
And, of course, it's lots of fun for me too, to show and describe the mountains of my present corner of the world - Salzburg and Berchtesgaden - and also the other places I've been to to all the fellow passionés from all over the world, and the response and feedback I have gotten makes me very, very happy! As usually I hike alone (except of course when I am in the Sächsische Schweiz with the woman I love!), I feel a strong intimacy between me and the mountains and the natural surroundings. One of the most wonderful moments of this sort of intimacy was when I was all alone up on Grand Mountet in the evening, the Dent Blanche, one of Switzerland's most important 4000ers, right vis-à-vis. Only me and the mountain...It's great to be able to share these special moments, and surely I'm speaking for many of you as well!

Dancing with Crampons
Since joining SummitPost, I have met some WORLD Class People on the site and in person. I wrote an article that people got a kick out of and I have taken some fairly good photos. And I learned a new word, SummitPorn.

Additionally, I have had to re-learn everything from my military days like how to layer my clothing and pack my internal frame backpack with the proper essentials. And I have become addicted to gear. That’s right, another element of this sport that gets you addicted. That gear, oh I can’t contain myself. Just drop me off at REI or Benchmark and leave me. I will just shop all night long with a headlamp and sleep in one of the display tents on a 2.5 inch self-inflatable pad with a down zero-degree bag and eat mountain house for dinner.

And if you find millions of tiny little holes in the carpet the next morning, it’s because I tried on crampons and danced all night to the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever.

Ok, back to the point. I am at work and my server won’t let me access Dingus Milktoast's page —it keeps calling it nudity. So I go to The Chief's page —blocked from that one because of profanity. Of course we can’t forget to mention the Kiefer Thomas famous self portrait that make company CIO’s cringe when they see it and hey, how do you explain to your wife that the Women of SummitPost's page album is important data that you are gathering for your next journey?

A new word for Wikipedia?
Pop ups? WE don’t need no stinking pop ups; our finger can click that mouse and open up Trip Reports, Articles, Pictures and have a conversation on the forums and PNP all at the same time

Well, maybe they have us after all. Say it isn’t so. PLEASE don’t outlaw SummitPorn. I don’t think I want to be in jail with some of the people on this site.

It will be 12 years next April. Amazing how the time flies and I've enjoyed all the people I've met through SP. Two of my very best friends I met through this site and so many others too numerous to name here. See below for an album on friends.

Just got back from pulling on some mid Old Skool 10's for two days in the A-Hills with SPer Tom Johnson (64 y/o) and ten days ago I was pulling 10d seven pitch route with SPer Kris Solem (59 y/o) in Pine Creek.

I'm going on 54 and pulling on and puttin up high tens and low eleven routes on a regular basis. Cranking on WI5/6 M6/7 Ice and guiding kids half my age all over the Sierra.

I've been here 11 years, on and off. It's a great community and I've been honored to share in it. The people here have character, and diverse, authentic views on the mountains. +1 to y'all.

7+ years for me. Have met many SPers throughout the years from many places. One Scottish guy I met and climbed with in Peru three years ago ended marrying one of my friends. SP is my main source of mountain info. It is where people come and find out I'm alive from an avalanche on Manaslu a month ago. It is where everybody knows your name. Cheers! Just like the Sierra Nevada is my home range, SP is my home climbing site.

Sorry... I did go rock-climbing in the Wadi Rum in Jordan in March... (free-solo to 5.2 and roped climbing to 5.6)
Both of my shoulders dislocate if I get in the wrong position (i.e., go climbing) and I've already had a couple of shoulder surgeries... not willing to have any more surgery.
And the meniscus in my right knee is gone from running too many trail ultras (see above comment regarding any more surgeries...)
So basically I'm a gimp.
