I assume he woke Wed with a trainload of snow (LeConte had 34") and tried to go southbound but set up camp, maybe near Mt Chapman? (One newspaper article mentioned he was off trail near Chapman.) I am unsure if he was off trail attempting to go west off the ridge to Ramsey Cascade. Most of the AT between the Bunion and Deer Creek Gap is >6000'. There's no easy exit as there are only 2 trails off the AT. The Balsam Mt trail stays high and Hughes Ridge tr doesn't drop very steep until you can head down Bradley Fork. Very lucky
