Winter Gathering January 18-20: Offical Thread

by Scott » Mon Dec 03, 2012 12:14 am

Offical thread for the 2013 Summitpost Winter Gathering in Colorado

It's been a while since we've had a winter gathering. It's time to get the tradition restarted!

When?

Evening of January 18 through January 20. Also, January 21 is a holiday and many people have the day off, so the trip can be extended into Monday.

Where?

January 19: Fourmile Creek Trailhead. There is a choice of peaks to attempt, such as Mt Sherman, Sheridan, and Horseshoe Peak, so hopefully there will be a suitable peak for all.

January 20: Hoosier Ridge, Red Peak, Red Mountain or North Twin Cone.

Each of these peaks should be suitable for in-shape winter beginners with the proper gear. Stronger climbers can climb multiple peaks on the same trip. On these climbs, avalanche danger can be avoided with care, but if you stray from proper winter routes, you can get into trouble. Those who are unfamiliar with avalanche terrain should stick with someone experienced.

The next weekend will be used as a backup in case of bad weather.

Who is invited?

Everyone who wants to come and brings the proper gear. Major obstacles are the wind and cold rather than technical difficulty, but don't underestimate the weather. Chill factors can be extremely low and arctic-like in winter.

We're in! Just booked flights and we'll be in Fairplay by afternoon on Fri. Probably stay at the haunted hotel.

As of right now I'm in. Got the go from my wife to camp.

A question I have is where are we going to camp? Are we going to use a campground and pay, or find a free spot? There is a nice meadow north of the road just past the horseshoe campground. That's where I camped before.

As far as I know, all pay campgrounds in the area are closed in the winter.

Fourmile Creek has good campsites and others may want to stay in Fairplay. This place is supposed to be nice:

Mostly likely, I'll be camping.

I'll be there for one of the 13ers in the area. Not sure if I'll be camping or not yet.

I didn't realize the campsites were closed in winter. It makes sense.
I won't be staying Fairplay, will be camping.

I'm in for the Sunday activities, and could get out that way for Saturday evening festivities if y'all don't get too rowdy in Fairplay.
Go climb a mountain

I won't be able to make it this weekend. I wanted to let you know about another place to stay (that is also said to be haunted):

http://www.handhotel.com/

The bathrooms in most of the rooms have been renovated and are clean. The Valiton has its charm, but the bathrooms aren't one of them. The Valiton does have a bar area though (you can walk there from the Hand Hotel :)).

Have fun everyone!

You're right! We walked into this place last time and like it. We've stayed at the Valiton during a Friday the 13th two winters ago and there was a paranormal convention. They had sensors, lasers and cameras set up all over the place and I still didn't get laid

I may come too... not sure yet - there is so much to do in the winter, but at least one day would be great. Miss Senad and Sarah...
