It's easy Matt. You feature them on the front page for a couple days! My highest scoring pages are relatively unknown for the Sierra but they got selected some time ago and ended up with a lot of votes.

It didn't hurt that they were very good to start with.
: -)

Also do not buy in to the assumption that there is a correlation between hits and votes. My page that gets the most hits per day is Tehipite Dome... a fairly exposed third class peak in the Sierra that has very little and poor information on it elsewhere. It's probably one of the most valuable additions I've made to the site. But though it gets tons of hits... it gets very few new votes at this point.

EDIT: it has gotten just ONE new vote in the last two years! Dispite literally 1000s of hits over that period. I just don't think the correlation is strong enough between hits and votes for that to be the solution.

I would be quite irritated if its score started decreasing just because people were accessing it to get information!

I have no idea if that would work Matt. Don't know how many SP members hit my page when logged in. It makes sense on the surface, but without seeing the data who knows. Still, I would be cautious. As I noted that page is very popular and has gotten only one vote in two full years.

Has anyone considered the possibility of sharing power points on pages where people collaborate? I am not sure if the points should be split or just everyone that owns a page jointly get the full amount of points. This might encourage more collaboration on pages.

Agreed. The owner of a page should have the option to share the points as they see fit with page administrators. 50/50, 60/40, whatever. And the administrators should have visibility to that and get notified if it changes.

What if the owner gets full points and admin gets a percentage. Folks with editing power can get a smaller percentage. I think this would encourage people to add more collaborators and the pie does not have to get smaller. I think this would be simpler too.

I think it's already like this. At least that's what Josh/Ryle said back during the launch of SPv2.

My impression is that the current system gives full points to both co-owners.

That's the way it was initially (as in only for a couple of weeks), but Josh/Ryle changed this shortly after the launch of SPv2. The points are split, unless it has changed again since then.

I am almost certain that currently only the owner gets the points. Everyone else gets zero. I've been admin on pages and given the rights to others, and the admins never saw point totals increase. I can definitely tell that the owner doesn't get partial points.

I don't think there should be duplication... where the owner gets all the points and the admins get some too. They should be split, otherwise games are played where you and your buddy share every page. If you want to share every page fine, but there should be a point to it and if both are contributing the you can give up a little for the other. If you don't want to, then keep the points yourself. This also creates some incentive for the admins to earn what they have, because they know they are taking points from the owner. (i.e. if someone just made me an admin without me taking their points, but I got some, I wouldn't be in as big a rush to spruce up the page as if I knew they had just sacrificed something for me)

The pie doesn't get smaller as I propose, just your slice of it. Americans are fat enough already though.

Scott, I think when Lolli made me a co-owner on Morne Diablotin on Dominica, I shot up a full 6 points overnight. And then when she made you a co-owner, I don't think I went down. But these are just vague impressions, I'd have to be paying pretty close attention to be sure about something like that.

Not sure there's any evidence of this, but I suppose it could happen.

I am almost positive this is correct. It may have been different back when, though.

There is an easy way to test. I have a dummy account that I used to use for working on pages under the radar (never used for voting or trolling). I will give admin privs to it for some of my pages and see if there are any point changes tomorrow.

I agree that co-maintainers should split points.

Yes; they used to be split. Josh's page on SPv2 still says that they are (see #9):

Right. We wouldn't really know until the system were implemented (or at least some data gathered) to find out. But my guess is that most traffic to highly visited pages is SE traffic that would never vote. But that logged in users would either vote or not and that might be a true sign of the quality of the page since (currently at least) most people vote 10 or don't vote.

Matt-

I think an easier solution to trying to incorporate hit counts into page scores would be to encourage SP members to vote on obscure pages.

I've been thinking for a while about ways to get people to vote more. Should be something very unobtrusive that you can easily bypass so that navigation around the site is not cumbersome. I had been considering ideas like a popup window after signing a summit log. It would simply ask if you would like to vote on the page, and have the 1-10 scale right there. If not, the user could quickly close it without voting. Shouldn't force folks to do it. I was never very passionate about this feature though.

Perhaps alternatively, when bowsing object pages a similar popup could appear (a better place for this to occur anyway). It shouldn't be at a large frequency, maybe give it a 1 in 10 chance of showing on a page you haven't voted on at most. Instead of implementing it like that though, you could make the odds of it showing somewhat higher on pages with fewer hits per day since creation date. This would put pages on a more equal footing in terms of getting feedback from members.

Agreed that admins of pages should get some cut of the pie. Perhaps 40%? Also I think editors should be visible. Otherwise people assume that it's the owner of the page who did all the work.
