POTM repeats.

by Tonka » Wed Feb 27, 2013 7:19 pm

I understand that there can and will be repeats and I have nothing against Henryk but for the last few weeks I get one of henryk's mount Charlston images over 50% of the time. These are run of the mill images which I can't imagine are being really voted on or considered high ranking in any way. What gives?

Tonka-

Please see an explanation of the front page photo processes here:

potd-potm-and-changes-to-photos-on-the-home-page-t64286.html

The simple explanation is that POTM shows the best photos with the highest scores by a decent handful of different members. If someone submits photos everyday, then unless a lot of other members submit photos then they have a good chance of having their photo included. Refresh the page and you will get new selections though.

If you got one photo 50% of the time then that is purely by chance. There is no actual way from someone to get their photo featured that often there, but again, how often depends also on how many other members submit images Take today for example... only 4 members submitted photos with higher scores than the Mount Charleston images, so his will be included. Their photos are included too.

This is a brand new photo he submitted today, and at this moment there are only 8 photos on the entire site submitted today with a higher score, and those eight are from just five different members. There are similarities here to photos submitted earlier, but this is a new one.

There is really only so much we can do, or should do. Folks are free to vote on photos as they wish and we aren't going to have a process that makes those votes not count. What would you suggest? Some members submit more photos than others... it is their preference. The cause for why these show up is simply that new ones are submitted on a daily basis.

This is picking on him a little. I should point out that the same applies to every other member and I've seen quite a few from several others who submit regularly. Refresh the home page... I often see pics from members I've never heard of.

Submit a few pics yourself, you have nice shots, and you will likely show in POTM too.

Sorry Henry!! I was not picking on you and you do have some great pics.

I was just trying to figure out why I was seeing such a large number of Charlston pics from the same person over an extended period of time. After looking again I see that he has put up a couple dozen between 2/22 and 2/27 so my "weeks" be only be days. Geez I need to get back to work.
