I'd be happy to create a subforum in Site Feedback for people to post on reworked pages. That would also help elves interested in featuring them.

Scott had also suggested a subforum for pages up for adoption, which also might be a nice idea.

Unless there's any objection, I can probably work on those things tomorrow. Unfortunately, I'll have a lot of time on my hands.

I am not opposed to that, however that doesn't accomplish what I am after. And personally I don't think it will be effective (not for what I am after... it may be effective for other things like elves seeing the pages).

We already have all the "what's new threads" in various regions. Those are largely unutilized and when they are used the vast majority of the site membership still overlooks them. This is easy to see by going back into the threads and looking at the votes a page registers after a post there, or how many hits it has.

There are three groups of members on the site... a forum group, a site content group, and a very small group that sees both. A forum spotlight section only reaches this last group, and it is a small community. I am trying to get after the second group... the pool that COMPLETELY ignores the forums. Even adding a single photo to a page gets more site content members to notice than posting it in a forum thread.

Similarly most people in the second group that completely ignores the forums is going to be less likely to post their effort in a thread. Ideally we also have some way to designate the item on the site content side. I think the 'What's new' page probably needs to be involved somehow.

Good points.

A forum addition won't hurt. A global PM about it could only help.

But you are right that some people will not look at the forums.

Ideas?

Here's one to start with, and take it where you will...

Instead of the front page having all these "Best of..." slots, replace one or all with "Recently updated pages."

Obviously, that is open to abuse. Attention whores can hit "Submit" without changing a thing and land on the front page. But consider the idea as a starting point and let's discuss...
"Alcohol is like love. The first kiss is magic, the second is intimate, the third is routine. After that you take the girl's clothes off."

It is a fine starting point. I've considered the same idea as well. The top spot could be a separate spot, with its own title as a recently updated page. I think an elf would need to manage it, rather then members being able to submit something to it... The only way it could be abused is if a member manipulated an elf into believing an update was major, when it was really not as big a deal. The elf would need to balance how many requests there are with the appropriate residence time, and how good the pages were. The thread could help them queue things up, but still I think even with a global PM the site content members would soon forget about the thread. But if they saw the spot on the home page they'd at least think about how to get there (by posting or PMing the elves). Ideally they should show what the page looked like prior to the update.

If there were something similar to those lines, and then a section on the what's new page for them so the residence time was longer (also some members use the what's new page more than the home page) then that's not too far from where it should be. On what's new I'd bump the albums down, probably put areas there, and put this where areas used to be.

Matt, the issue seems most common when people use the browser Safari. So if you wanted to figure this out, you should test out with that browser.

I'm having repeated problems creating a new image page. I get to 100% upload with a photo and then a blank SP page pops up with no picture or text. The URL is showing http://www.summitpost.org/new_create_object.php but nothing else happens. A page reload starts the upload process over and then the same thing happens.

8,334 KB. I uploaded 9 in a row and when I tried the 10th it failed. I've tried maybe 4 times in 2 days to finish my TR but am stuck on the page issue.

I've heard this years ago... photos over 8 megabytes cannot upload. But perhaps things have changed.

I personally use Picasa 3 and use the export tool to resize hundreds of photos in speedy time! Plus you don't have to worry as much about people stealing your pics when they are in moderate resolution.

I usually batch process my photos to a smaller resolution but I didn't check these (thinking they were older and thus smaller.) I'll batch 'em and try again.

Thanks!

I forgot to sign in and tried to add an image to an existing page. I think the way it used to be is that you weren't even given the option, but now under contribute you can click on add route, image, trip report, and album even when not signed in. It lets you enter stuff and when you click submit you get a not very useful error message such as

replace_object() INSERT INTO `objects` SET `object_id`=NULL,`type_id`=3,`last_edit`=NOW(),`creation`=NOW(),`last_edit_user_id`=NULL,`created_user_id`=NULL,`construction`='No',`object_name`='Island Mountain',`latitude`='40.1409',`longitude`='-111.1101',`tags`='Skiing',`object_body_nft`='Island Mountain (8140\') is located in the southeast corner of Strawberry Reservoir. Rainbow Point is sitting in front of it. This is the last little strip of land before the ice. It\'s only .47 miles across the water to Rainbow Point. This picture was taken due west of the SW corner of Rainbow Point. February-12-2013',`object_body_ft`=NULL,`is_primary_photo_user_set`=0,`query_name`='Island Mountain' ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE `object_id`=NULL,`type_id`=3,`last_edit`=NOW(),`creation`=NOW(),`last_edit_user_id`=NULL,`created_user_id`=NULL,`construction`='No',`object_name`='Island Mountain',`latitude`='40.1409',`longitude`='-111.1101',`tags`='Skiing',`object_body_nft`='Island Mountain (8140\') is located in the southeast corner of Strawberry Reservoir. Rainbow Point is sitting in front of it. This is the last little strip of land before the ice. It\'s only .47 miles across the water to Rainbow Point. February-12-2013',`object_body_ft`=NULL,`is_primary_photo_user_set`=0,`query_name`='Island Mountain' failed: DB Error: constraint violation

Ideally, you shouldn't be given the option of contributing if you aren't signed in, or at the very least be given a more useful message such as "You need to sign in first."

An Addition/Correction to a page will show up in the Comments on the What's New page. However, when I just clicked on one, the link didn't bring me to the relevant Addition/Correction, but to the Comments for the page!

The old editor no longer displays a map. :( I think this happened when you swapped from Google Maps API 2 to 3. So could you bring it in for the old editor?

I can't post a new topic in Gear...clicking "New Topic" takes me to my profile page. Making a New topic in all other forums works fine.

Try it now. I reset your permissions for Gear. In theory, you should be good to go.
