I recently acquired a job in Breckenridge Colorado, and am now planning to move out within a month. I’m searching for an apartment or condo to rent for 6 months to a year before investing in some real estate. I have been doing a lot of research and am finding it very difficult to find any places since its peak ski season out there. If anyone from the area has any tips, suggestions, or knows of a good agent who could help me out, that would be great. I may end up living out of my car for a bit or commuting from Denver since I’m not willing to pay $500 a day to stay at what seems to be the only available rooms which are a part of the ski resorts.

Check Silverthorne and Fairplay. Silverthorne has a hostel, though you may be too late to book many nights. Fairplay has a fairly inexpensive RV Park/Motel that has reasonable, if not fancy rooms.

Also consider asking on 14ers.com as Bill Middlebrook lives in Breckenridge and could probably tell you more than anyone.

I know a lot of people that work in Breck live in Alama but the town is small. Check some local rags for roomate options also.

Thanks, my wife will be moving out too a week or two after myself, so I'm looking for more of a permanent stay where I can store my belongings. (being single was so much easier!)

A few weeks ago, there was a cabin for rent in Alma. I can't remember who was listing it. You might call a local real estate agent (Caniglia seems to handle quite a few properties in Alma) and see if the can direct you to local rentals. Search for "Caniglia Alma" to find their web site.

Edit: The cabin may have been a vacation rental, in which case it might be expensive but the owner might accept a longer term lease over the vacation rental. A lot of people will consider that, since most of the vacation rentals sit empty during the spring.

Another Edit: Before moving towards Denver, move south towards Fairplay, Buena Vista, or areas west of Colorado Springs. Going north along Highway 9 is an option as well. You definitely don't want to commute over I70, and prices will be lower going north/south than they will going east.

I live in a ski town on the opposite side of the pass, and if Breck is anything like Vail/Beaver Creek, everyone moves out of the employee housing in April and you can get short term rentals on the cheap in those places through the summer. They usually start kicking you out in October for their next season's staff.

I am not sure what properties in Breck are the employee housing, but it could be a good short term solution. Not sure how it will work with the timing of your move though, end of March starts to see some of the seasonal folks leaving as the visitors drop off and spring thaw requires some lifts to close, so you might be able to get in there in April? I have a friend that was working on golf courses in Eagle County during the summer and stayed in ski resort employee housing, but he had to live in an extended stay hotel for a few weeks before the ski employees left.

The ski area housing is a condo complex just north of the police station and elementary school. I've never been in them so I can't comment on them. SInce Vail/Beaver Creek is run by the same company as Breck, the deal is probably the same. This might be a good suggestion if it fits with your schedule.

So now that I'm all moved in, today was the first day I got to go out and had some fun. I took my snowshoes up Royal Mountain. It was a wonderful snowy day. I didn't see anyone on the trail, and only had the soft crunch of snow to keep me company. I hope this is just the first of many adventures since I seem to be surrounded by them!
