Pumo Ri?

by Diver » Thu Apr 25, 2013 5:36 pm

i took this pictures during track from the BC to IBC on Everest Tibetan side. Can someone tell me if the peak pointed by red line is Pumo Ri? How about a sharp looking one to it's left?

Diego,

thanks for the map. from the map i could see that 3 peaks could be that peak from my picture: Khumbutse, Lingtren and Pumo Ri. That still doesn't answer my question though :)

I've never been to the Himalaya in my life and probably never will. But, I love a good Google Earth challenge. :)

FWIW, I tried to duplicate as best as I could the location that your picture was taken. Then I scrolled around to determine the names of the peaks in the view:

As you can see, the peak that you suspected was Pumo Ri is actually Lingtren. Nuptse is visible through the gap known as Lho La. Moving the point of view a bit to the left (east) reveals Pumo Ri:

(It's a beautiful day! Shouldn't I be outside hiking somewhere??? )

Nice work, boyblue.

To add, the peak marked '???' is Guangming Peak (6533m/6485m).

Well, I was going to guess Lingtren but easy to say so afterwards :)

Damien,

Are you sure it's not Khumbutse? Guangming seems to be a 1860m peak in eastern china. I can't find much info on it.

Khumbutse according to a map posted earlier is 6665ft, so it should be visible. Unless this Guangming peak is right in front of it and it hides it nicely.

Yes.

Or, 6665m perhaps?

so it should be visible.

Mountains rarely do what they should. But yes, I too thought Khumbutse would be visible, but it's not, because...

Yes, it does.

Khumbutse and Lingtren are better known names as they are visible from Nepal and were known by those names at least as far back as the 1930s. I think Guangming may be a newer name from the Chinese. Some other peaks in the area were re-named by the Chinese after the 1950s.

Guangming Peak is well marked on the Lhanzou Institute Chinese map of the area (one of the better maps around) though the altitude is 6485, whereas on the excellent Bradford Washburn / NG map it is 6533m, and also marked as Guangming Peak.
