what is happening with the weather?

by youngclimer123 » Fri May 03, 2013 3:17 am

after a far below average water year in 2012-213(52% of avg) and record high temps yesterday and today, numerous fires have started across California.currently, 13 fires are burning in California 6 are not contained. however in the Midwest it is snowing, and cold.

fire info here
http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_current

also the temperatures are expected to drop next week with a chance of showers and high elevation snow beginning this Sunday, here in California.

I do believe the term is "Spring". In California, it's the season where Winter can quickly transition into Summer.

Someone said this is the second coldest spring in history of the US on record

I found an article online, but it says "start of spring"? I don't think the April data has been compiled yet? :?:

March was indeed cooler (0.9 deegress F) and drier than normal in the Contiguous US, but it was the 43rd coldest on record:

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/national/2013/3

April data hasn't been published yet, but it would have to be extremely cold (by far the coldest on record) to bring it down to the 2nd coldest spring. Was it really that cold? It will be interesting to see the data.

World wide, it was the 10th warmest March. April data should be published soon.

Edit: It looks like whoever published the claim about the 2nd coldest spring published it on April 25 and compared it to March 1-April 30 for other years and March 1-April 18 this year. How does that work? Shouldn't you wait until April is over when comparing this year to March 1-April 30 in other years? :?: The second half of April is usually warmer than the first half and usually much warmer than a March 1-April 30 average would be. The data for all of April should have been added in first.

I know I'm a weather nerd, but it seems like it is comparing apples and oranges until all of April is added in unless all time periods are using the same dates.

...Weirdly enough,...
It seems like whenever something goes wrong in this post-modern era,...a bunch of whacko-conspiracy theorists claim that it's all because of GLOBAL WARMING !!! Ironically, the math of it (the statistics) is so complex that even the powerful supercomputers on the planet can't figure it out.
My intuition tells me that Earth's weather IS VERY COMPLEX,...after all, the weather has been around for billions of years, and, involves physics that we don't fully comprehend. Frankly, I like it. I'm thinking that if someday some genius figures out what causes the varios weather phenomena, then, there's hope that us mere mortals may someday actually figure out what women want (even though I've seen the movie, I continue to get it completely wrong).

Something's burning, and I think it's love.

There is significant debate over how one should average temperatures over the continents and oceans. Some argue that the weight of each temperature reading should be inversely proportional to the the averages distance to surrounding stations. The latter system tends to weight heat islands heavily. The weighting method can determine whether a region comes out above or below average.

I think the number of snow records broken for April, in this area, was 1300. Rapid City SD got over 40" in April alone. Not every area has had a snow decline......many mountains in WY have a surplus right now. LAST YEAR we had a serious decline......go figure. Billions of years (supposedly), and these "scientists" think they have everything figured out based on 100yrs of data. These are the same morons that awarded DDT a Nobel Prize due to it being safe for human consumption. Look, if you research the initial 1850-1870's exploration of the Tetons, the accounts I read stated "due to very clean water, and the lack of significant snowfall to speak of, we have concluded that there is no glacial activity in the Teton range". They also noted little to no permanent ice fields. Yet a team in the early 1900's recorded over 15 glaciers. I guess it was all of the carbon emissions back in the 19th century that melted it all off. Oh, and there are black and white photos of the Eiger or Matterhorn (I forget which one) that show no snow cover in winter. We don't know SQUAT about weather patterns over the lifespan of this planet.....heck, we have billions of dollars of equipment and can't even forecast weather to 5 days out with consistent accuracy! I'll spend my time worrying about other things!
