Best Trails to train for 14ers

by Ariley0925 » Sun Jun 09, 2013 12:16 am

Hey everyone!
So I have hiked several 14ers but my friend just moved here from Kansas and has a goal set to hike Bierstadt in August. We are wanting to do some hiking tomorrow and I am having a rough time finding any conditions on trails and good trails to get some training miles/elevation in. Any suggestions or thoughts would be really helpful! We are coming from Denver area not wanting to go much beyond north wise Boulder or westward past Georgetown.

Probably 14ers like Bierstadt or you could do square Top from the same TH.
I'm sure there are 1000's of hiking options that the locals can chime in with.

Bear Peak and South Boulder Peak just S of Boulder: Mesa Trailhead on the Eldorado Springs Road along Mesa Trail to Fern Canyon, to Bear Pk., around the back and across the saddle to S. Boulder Pk., back via Shadow Canyon.

Bergen Peak in Evergreen: Trailhead on Stagecoach Rd., across the top of Elk Meadow, up the trail to the peak, back down the other trail to the car.

Bear Peak and S. Boulder Peak gives more elevation gain than Bierstadt. These are excellent peaks to train on.

If you want some elevation training, Chief Mtn. up Squaw Pass Road.

Mt. Sniktau is another short hike, but gets you above 13,000 feet. Also not bad for elevation training.

I second Bergen Peak in Evergreen and nearby Chief Mt., which involves a nice, windy drive and has a much better summit. Both are close to Denver, short and sweet with great trails.
