+1 for Raymond's Deli. Great tuna sandwich, about as good as my sandwich spot back home.

Still Life cafe in Independence was really good too, if in the area. On the pricey side, but good. And they speak French. And it isn't McDonalds or <insert repugnant fast food chain name here>

Lone Pine: Alabama Hills Cafe for breakfast; Merry-Go-Round for Chinese food

Indy: Still Life Cafe

BP: Copper Top BBQ

Bishop: Las Palmas for burritos/margaritas/salsa bar; Petite Panty for breakfast (makes leftover, and there WILL be leftovers into a burrito) or all-you-can-eat specials nightly; Great Basin Bakery; Burger Barn

Mammoth: Good Life Cafe for breakfast/lunch specials; Perry's for dinner (best damn Cioppino in a LONG time, ironically, but I need to get out to the coast more); Base Camp Cafe; new specialty store called Bleu (next to Perry's); Z-Ranch has the best happy hour ever; too bad they are charging $5 for tasting at Mammoth Brewing Co.; Toomey's in the Village

Lee Vining: Fuck it: head up the hill to TPR. I hear they are taking credit cards nowadays.

Three pages of post-hike food talk, and not one mention of a pizza place?! Nik-N-Willies and Pizza Factory both hit the spot after a day or two on the trail near Bishop. In fact, good pizza and good beer are always my favorites upon return to civilization, regardless of where. The burgers at Whitney Portal (yeah, I know, too far south for this thread) are a close second. :D

The Thai place in ML and the Alabama Hills Cafe in Lone Pine are the only 2 places I've found worth spending time at. I often just go to the Natural Food market next to Looney Bean in the Rite Aid shopping center in ML, get enough stuff to make my own and then sit outside in the courtyard there and enjoy a very satisfying meal.

+1. If God didn't want us to eat animals, why did He make them out of meat?

food plan

by paisajeroamericano » Thu Aug 08, 2013 4:45 pm

i know it is, well, unconventional, but I agree with the OP's food plan - personally, i've never been able to stomach breakfast except on a lazy sunday afternoon - it's too cold in the morning and i'm too lazy to wake up earlier and prepare something - i've always found that, for me, eating too early in the hike makes me sluggish - i prefer to build up a bit of a calorie debt, then cram some food in to make up for it

i normally do eat during a hike, but let's be honest, an 8-hour hike is a pretty short hike, even if you can manage to cover some serious ground in that time - for an 8-hour work day in the mountains, i generally bring a 1000-calorie snack, but often don't even touch it - for a longer hike, i usually wait about 5 hours before i even think about eating, then i shove 1000 calories in my mouth and keep at it

for serious endurance hikes, it's critical to force yourself to maintain hydration and calorie consumption - for a short to medium duration hike, personally i kinda like going light and fast and then saving space for the all-you-can-eat buffet... which reminds me, nobody mentioned the Sizzler in Bishop - that's a fine option (if it's still open)

Nope: no more Sizzler, and no more buffet Chinese/Japanese/Mongolian BBQ. Building has been closed and up for lease for more than a few months now.
