Where on Ritter was that ice? I did the north face route on September 13 and even with crampons and an axe the ice was exciting.

at the base of the regular route once you start climbing above the Ritter/Banner saddle. Plan to head back up there and complete it with some ice gear this Friday and then head down the SE glacier.

trying to squeeze some juice out of the Sierra still!

Yeah, that was definitely the place. For me that was the hardest part of the route, once I exited onto a ramp near the top it was smooth and easy sailing.

What was the status of that gap between the ice sheet and the start of the rock scrambling (the ramp) (when its time to get off the ice) ?

from when i was there, looked like it was possible to climb down into the gap if needed and climb out and surmountable in some sense, but would like some more specific beta.

There was no noticeable gap between the ice and the ramp.

Its hard to see the ramp from this photo but from Seccor's description it stood out from the saddle.
