Has anyone done this couloir? It's on the NE face of Top Notch Peak, just past Sylvan Pass in YNP. Trying to decide if it might go now or if I should wait till spring. I just noticed it the other day.

cheers, chugach. I'm wondering if it might be a fun way to get to the ridge and tag the summit. Sounds like we might run into the notch though.

Yup, you would end up on the wrong side of the notch, so to tag the true summit you'd have that challenge to deal with. Or you could just be content with the northeast summit and boogie on down the NE ridge.

I have to admit I haven't looked closely at the notch in modern times--it may not be as much of a bear to cross as it seemed (or was) when I first went up the northeast ridge 35 years ago. I tried to check the notch out again last summer but a T-storm chased me off just before I got to it. If you go up there, let me know!

Thanks, I will. If the weather holds, we'll get after it next week. If not, I'll wait till spring. Thinking we'll get up high on the side of the bowl and glass the couloir from there. The exit looks a bit hairy in the photos I have, though the satellite maps make it look like it goes cleanly to the ridge. Guess we'll find out
