What makes you participate in Mountaineering?

by Doddzi_72 » Thu Dec 12, 2013 6:06 pm

(UNIVERSITY RESEARCH)

Have you ever considered the reasons you participate in high risk sports? What personality traits do people possess that make them want to risk their life?

You can assist our research into personality types in high risk sports simply by taking our survey; participants are given the option to enter their email address into a draw for a £50 cash prize as an incentive for taking the survey. Should take no more than 10-15 minutes out of your time.

Thanks for your time

I know I'll never see my boss in the backcountry, and he can't get hold of me with his silly-azz problems because I'm out of cell phone range.

( Why would I enter a contest to win 50 British pounds when I live in the USA? )

Circumstances at home certainly don't help. Being put at the edge makes me want to do the physical version which is mountaineering. :) The crazier it gets at home, the more I'm inclined for doing an epic.

For the achievement.... there is no joy in the mountains. Shit is hard, dangerous, and terrifying, and if I had any control over my compulsions, I'd quit.
where am i going... and why am i in this handbasket?

The question shouldn't be "what makes you go to the mountains" but instead "what makes you live at home?".

Because I don't like to spend a bunch of boring time on switchbacks!

Why do I climb? I wanted a way to test myself, learn about my fears and what makes me panic. Mostly, however, I just wanted to enjoy mountains to the full. Climbing seems like the best way to accomplish that.

I think it's the chemical pay-off in the brain when you reach the top. Combination of long-burning adrenaline, endorphins and something else I can't remember the name of. Plus getting to stop is really nice.

Getting back down is nicer. Pulling my boots off is my favorite part of the climb.

yeah, I meant getting to stop once it's all over and you can sit down and eat whatever you want and go to sleep. Good stuff. My favorite thing in the whole world is crawling into my sleeping bag after a climb. I like it so much, I'll even stay out a day longer than necessary just so I can have that moment instead of packing up and hiking out.

Me, I like to go somewhere way off the interstate routes, car-camp at the trailhead, be walking on the trail at 4 am, summit at 8, be down by 11, then find a cheapo motel in some dusty-ass town where the food options are Dairy Queen or whatever the gas station sells. For a few hours or a day or two, I feel like I have temporarily dropped out, living the marginal life. Then I go home, work some more so I can do it all again.

Plus, it impresses the babes.

I like to be able to provide knowledgeable input for on-line surveys.
