High Uinta Conditions

by rmjwinters » Sat Jun 01, 2013 1:52 pm

Anyone been in the high Uintas recently? I am looking for any beta on snowpack/conditions for any of the north slope drainages.

I headed up the standard approach to Kings Peak on 5/27. I made it 5-6 miles (?), then ran into a full-on slush-bog and gave up. The slush was too soft for snowshoes to help even fairly early in the morning. Things were similar up above Hoop Lake, with plenty of slush-bog below treeline.

Hi. Starting to plan a summer trip to Kings Peak via Henry's Fork, standard approach. Considering it's a slightly less than average snow year (so far), what's the earliest date you would expect the majority of this route to be snow free? is July 4th a safe bet? Thanks for any advice!

In a fairly (not extremely) dry year, yes. There will likely be a few snowfields to cross, some wet ground, and mosquitoes, but most of the route will be snow free assuming the rest of the winter/spring stays fairly dry there.

Any update on this? I'm trying to do the Kings-Emmons Ridge in the next month or so, and I'd like to be as aware as possible of the conditions.

All the old snow from last winter should be gone.

Just got back from an ascent of Kings Peak; no snow on any of the summits or ascent routes.

Yeah I hiked out 8/16 and there were a few snow fields left here and there but nothing on any of the trails or anything that looked like it would cause you any trouble.

We just got dumped on in the Tetons and I know further north has even more so...what's the recent status with Kings, etc? I wanna do the Kings-Emmons traverse this month but I don't know the weather patterns down there well.
