I'm aware that the last part of the drive to the TH gets rough, but is it rough to the point of needing high clearance? If possible, I'd like to avoid the extra cost of renting an SUV this summer and stick with something cheaper.

High clearance isn't necessary. Don't take a low rider on it, but normal clearance is plenty. I've seen plenty of sedan type cars at that trailhead. When are you out here.....I'll be in that area a couple times this summer.

Likely somewhere around July 4-16 but perhaps as early as the end of June. I'm waiting for my wife to figure out if she's going to Hawaii for a friend's wedding or not. Given the choice between sand and touristy stuff or snowy peaks, I choose the latter.

Funny.....I'll be headed to Northern VA at that time June 30-July 8th My wife grew up in Vienna and I grew up 80 miles south west. I don't blame you for picking peaks over the beach....I'm flying back out here while my wife and kids go to Rehoboth Beach in DE for another couple of weeks with her fam.....I'll pass on slow cooking in the sand for glaciers and t storms.

I have an extra harness and all the gear, so if you're traveling light, all you'd need would be your shoes.

If it's nasty hot and humid by then, the climbing will suck, but fortunately I have a few kayaks as well, all of which can handle at least Class 4 water. I'm not a playboater, though, more a river runner.

I think it's time to finally suck it up and deal with the crowds in order to see that place. Once, I saw it from Mount Washakie, but that's not the same. Hopefully, my habits of starting really early and wandering from the path will give me some peace.
