Flat tops vs HC Fools peak

by jcramsey@indy.rr.com » Tue Jun 10, 2014 2:53 am

Will be in central Colorado in mid-July and would like to do short (3 day/2 night) backpack into Flat Tops or nearby area. Would plan to backpack in to lake to set up camp first day, then day hike out of campsite 2nd day to a summit or other feature, return to campsite and hike out 3rd day (don't plan to move campsite). GOOD FISHING ALWAYS A PLUS.

Have looked at several Flat Tops trails--see a lot of lake opportunities, but unsure of "2nd day" climb (hence the name)--any advice would be appreciated.
Have been intrigued by the hike into Holy Cross Wilderness to Lake Charles and Mystic Lake--with the idea that we could climb Fool's Peak on Day 2. Although North Ridge sounds like excellent Class 3 scrambling, my buddies have hiked alot, but not scrambled much. Looks to me on Topos that there may be an easier approach--there seems to be a pass due west of summit from the Lake Charles approach that would give access to the more gradual south approach to summit.

Any comments /advice re above greatly appreciated
Sorry for any redundancy--first posted this as seperate forum, but was advised to put on Colorado forum
