SHELF ROAD - high clearance needed or not?

by Niederbayer » Sun Jun 08, 2014 9:15 pm

internet research for Shelf Road gave me conflicting info about what car is needed for this road - got anything from 4 wheel drive, high clearance 2WD to any normal car -

I drive a standard Toyota Corolla - do I have enough clearance for this road?

thank you

Hopefully somebody has more recent info than I do, but I've driven that road 3 times: Once in a subaru outback, once on a motorcycle (cruiser), and once in a ford pinto. Never had a problem. All except the outback were before Shelf was a developed climbing area (and before the road was as well maintained as the last time I went down it.)

A standard vehicle can be driven with care. Washboard bumpy with one larger washout.

I agree with Monster5, it's a normal dirt road. Some rough spots, but certainly passable in any vehicle.

People ride their street bikes (motorcycles) to climb at Shelf. You'll be fine in a sedan.
Go climb a mountain

If you mean just up to the campground, I think you should be fine. I've gone up there with a big group with all types of cars, and don't recall anyone having issues.

What if one meant the whole road from Canon City to Cripple Creek?

Drove the road from Canon City to Cripple Creek yesterday afternoon in a Dodge Charger, following a Mustang most of the way. No issues. Could count the potholes without taking my socks and shoes off.
