I can't say I haven't been tempted by the overfed, begging, thieving creatures found at Grand Canyon and Yosemite. But, like their vermin cousin the pigeon, they're usually smart enough to stay just out of foot range.

I am surprised that it warranted a 2:27 special report on the local news, but it's their right to use the airtime as they see fit. Clearly unnecessary and heartless; there are far too many idiots.

I don't mind my cat eating them on my own land, and there is something about driving a car that dulls the regret of accidently smashing one here and there, but intentionally killing one on public lands with premeditation involved is rightfully considered criminal. I'd make exceptions for legal hunting scenarios followed by grilling with butter and garlic. I bet Larry would even eat it if someone else did all the work for him.

Why are you talking about killing a squirrel?
Squirrel is lightweight enough that it would survive a fall from any height.

You may be right! He could've skidded to a stop in some soft scree and was rescued by marmots and nursed back to squirrel health. :)

Wait...there are no marmots in the grand canyon.

This thought struck my mind too, although I was unable to find any previous research studies with a definitive answer. Depends on the setting. If it was one of those thin wild squirrels way in the backcountry, its survival may be plausible. But if it was one of those rotund, tourist-fed squirrels that lives in a highly-visited area, all bets are off.

Maybe the squirrels deserve more credit.
