Compression tights as a base layer?

by deungsan » Sat Mar 07, 2015 8:24 pm

Is there any drawback to wearing full-length compression tights as a base layer under a wind/water proof shell?

I've worn them for mountain running but never above 10,000 feet, and it's usually been for less than 5 hours. Like them a lot.

Now I'm wondering if it would be good to wear them on a 2-day end-of-winter 14er climb in lieu of longjohns. My concern is that they might adversely affect circulation in the feet while at altitude.
Thanks.

Wear compression socks if concerned, they ought to do the trick.

ColdGear compression tights (leggings) are my go-to under a waterproof softshell pant for six seasons in Peru well into the 6000m areas for weeks on end - they work great

I remember discussing compression socks for mountaineering with a friend and he brought up the idea that they might not be a good idea because of the fact that the socks restrict the blood flow and hence could make your feet colder. Similar to wearing boots that were too tight. Has anyone found that to be true, and would that reasoning extend to compression tights??

Likewise, have used compression pants/shirt for years as a base layer with no issues and certainly no concerns about circulation although can be uncomfortable after several days.
