Help identify a desert find?

I came across this object in the Dead Mtns along the Colorado River recently and was somewhat taken aback. At first it looked like old mining equipment, a pipe perhaps when it was half-buried. I nudged it out with my foot and it suddenly looked like an unexploded ordnance. After more thought, I'm not so sure, but I'm rather curious. Anyone know more about this than my half-ass guess?

Further research shows the area was used in 1942-43 for desert warfare training to prepare troops for North Africa.

My bad. I assumed it was farther south.

I have yet to come across ordnance as good as shape as you found, but I have had the interesting experience of climbing a peak out that way with distant "booms" every few seconds coming from live-fire exercises.
