Help identify a desert find?

by Bob Burd » Thu Dec 03, 2015 3:21 am

I came across this object in the Dead Mtns along the Colorado River recently and was somewhat taken aback. At first it looked like old mining equipment, a pipe perhaps when it was half-buried. I nudged it out with my foot and it suddenly looked like an unexploded ordnance. After more thought, I'm not so sure, but I'm rather curious. Anyone know more about this than my half-ass guess?

Bob, that looks like an old 75mm round or something like that. That is a fun find!

Google "70mm artillery shell" and "images".

Yikes!

Take only photographs. Leave only unexploded ordinance.

They weren't practicing the leave no tracer rounds principles, that's for sure.

Having been in the military, I can assure you that the military cares nothing about LNT.

I am impressed. Did you contact the Yuma MCAS or Barry Goldwater people to let them know of this?

Further research shows the area was used in 1942-43 for desert warfare training to prepare troops for North Africa.

My bad. I assumed it was farther south.

I have yet to come across ordnance as good as shape as you found, but I have had the interesting experience of climbing a peak out that way with distant "booms" every few seconds coming from live-fire exercises.

Looks like it could be connected to radical terrorism, but not sure.

Dunno. Not like I was going to pick the thing up and shake it or anything.

Here's a couple more I couldn't identify. Anybody recognize these from their personal doomsday arsenal?
