Skiing Shasta early April

by aedwards » Tue Mar 01, 2016 8:45 pm

Any current info or speculation about climbing and skiing Shasta via the Hotlum-Wintun the first week of April?
Haven't done Shasta yet, so any good info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would anticipate the trailheads to be very long approaches in early April. The east trailheads are the last to melt out. Getting a good date would only be speculation right now but May is probably a better guess.

too far without a snowmobile for the hot/win route until probably mid-late June this year.

direct your route choices to the ones starting at bunny flat. west face is a great ski and so are trinity chutes/avi gulch.

Yes it is way too far to be realistic for a trip of a few days. When snowed in the trailheads the north side can be as little as a few miles. Eastern trailheads are too far.

If you want to ski away from Avalanche Gulch I'd suggest Diller Canyon. Just watch for rockfall.

Diller Canyon requires a good 4x4. The road is in very poor condition. There are other places to ski and keep away from crowds.
We have plenty of snow and skiing is great!

I skinned and hiked up Avalanche Gulch on June 5. Put on my skis just below the summit and skied all the way to my car. It was icy and not much fun above The Thumb. The skiing was good to spectacular from The Thumb to Helen Lake. Below Helen Lake, it was slop, but still 100 times better than walking with boots. The descent took 55 minutes.
