California Mountains in early April

by arm » Mon Mar 21, 2016 4:23 pm

greetings

we're planning to play in California for ten days in early april ...

Whitney Mountaineers Route and Shasta Casaval Ridge are high on our wish list ... if we have decent conditions, we should have extra days to play elsewhere ...

got any recommendations ? fun climbs or any other fun stuff to do nearby ? thanks !

Some of the areas worth researching that can be similar to your two mentioned goals (listed south to north between the two):

-Mt. Williamson (approach is somewhat long)
-University Peak (early April approach may be long)
-The Palisades
-Little Lakes Valley area/Rock Creek Rd./Mt. Abbot, etc.
-Convict Lake area/Mount Morrison, etc.
-Mt. Dana area (early April approach may be long)
-Virginia Lakes Area
-Matterhorn Peak/Sawtooth Ridge/Mono Village TH Area
-Carson Pass Area/Round Top
-Tahoe Area Peaks
-Lassen Peak/Brokeoff-Lassen Traverse

Keep in mind that the famous 14ers will be fun in decent conditions, but not necessarily more fun than lower or lesser known objectives.

An idea for something different or to escape unfavorable conditions:

-Death Valley NP: Telescope Peak, or countless colorful peakbagging, canyoneering, and general hiking opportunities. I can elaborate. Here's a good overview site, but the author admittedly tends to avoid class 4-5 stuff-- http://panamintcity.com. The wildflowers are unusually plentiful this spring. A major heatwave would likely steer you to high elevation choices here.

There are other low to mid elevation climbing and bouldering areas between your two objectives, but I’m not sure if you are looking for that.

In the Whitney area: Langley via Tuttle Creek. Le Conte, Mallory, and Irvine via Meysan Lakes. A bit farther north, St. Jean Couloir on Split.
