Tuolumne Meadows conditions

by fruitflyman » Thu May 12, 2016 4:18 pm

Does anyone know conditions on Cathedral Peak and Matthes Crest? I am sure there's still a lot of snow on the approach, but are the routes themselves free of snow?

Anyone have an additional updates? With the road open we are hitting up Lyell Canyon over the weekend and want to know what the approach will be like (i.e., is the whole trail snow covered still)?

Here's a report from last weekend:
http://highsierratopix.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=14378--->>>

Looking southward to Mount Dana from Tioga Peak (eastern YNP to the right):
Image

NPS was reporting substanial snowpack above 8,000 feet and especially above 8,500 feet
as of May 16: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wildcond.htm

You can search Instagram or do a Google search of Instagram photos for various locations and peaks. Some taken last week show TM looked mostly snow free at the meadow level. New snow earlier this week east of Tioga Pass looked light in photos and will melt fast with the coming warm temperatures, but with storms this week, the best specific short term information would come from photos and reports today, tomorrow, and over the weekend.

Good luck to all avoiding thunderstorms!

Has anyone climbed Cathedral Peak or Matthes Crest yet this season? Or have pictures? Headed there next weekend.

SE Buttress route on Cathedral Peak completely dry. Backside (NW) descent has some snow. Some snow on the approach but no need for snowshoes. Mostly solid snow cover from Cathedral Pass to Matthes Crest.
